Simple Machine 2.0 has been released
« on: June 16, 2011, 06:25:26 am »
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=437328.0

As the title says.
This forum currently uses SFM 1.1.13
and 2.0 is finally available.
Apparently there are many many changes, but at what levels this would be apparent at the user interface level I don't know exactly.
Who thinks I should upgrade?  :o

Dave.

well the forums seems to run quite well but I have missed email notifications of replies but that could be down to server load ? maybe the new version put less stress on the server ?

There will be a changelog somewhere. I'd upgrade, (check your dependencies first) but I'd be waiting a couple of weeks. Invariably with these releases there are problems that beta and RC stages missed. Usually most of these issues are cleared within the first few weeks. With a release date of 11th June I'd give it another couple of weeks, let poodle monthly or some other forum have the headaches.

The email alerts should be working.
Don't use them myself, so have don't keep track on these things.

I've created a new separate test forum for SMF 2.0
https://www.eevblog.com/forum2

Please try it out and let me know what you think.
It installed without a hitch, so a proper upgrade shouldn't be a problem.
If everyone likes it then I can upgrade the proper forum to the new version which will bring us up to date, and also allow more of the new add-on mods that are only available in the 2.x forum.
Actually, we likely have to upgrade to this eventually anyway, it's the only way forward now they have formally released 2.0
Seems to operate just the same to me, just with a more modern interface.

NOTES:
1) I didn't copy attachments, so they won't show up.
2) Any uploaded avatars won't work either.
3) Some existing plug-in's may not work any more.
4) This test forum operates on a copy of the database from a week or two back, so won't show the latest posts, and any new posts won't be copied back to the proper forum.
But apart from the above, feel free to post and experiment with it.

Thanks.
Dave.

Looks are certainly refined, not sure what is new under the hood, maybe that should be the determining factor.

It seems almost the same as the current one so in terms of usability most of us here will feel at home.

Maybe it is a good idea to do it at a time (from history) the least number of people are on to have time to rectify any issues.

this button is most important to me... "Show unread posts since last visit." since its still available in smf2 (with more modern interface feeling etc), i vote to upgrade, and hopefully all previous threads/posts will be retained. do we have to change address too? for the bookmarked old threads?

No lost posts, no address change, and no change to links or other stuff that I am aware of.
It is designed to "just work", just like I've upgraded the forum various times already.
Fundamentally the changes in 2.0 are in the database structure to support more features, but the install does this automatically. And of course the new more modern look'n'feel.
And all new add-on packs will likely only support this new 2.0 forum from now on, so it's it's pretty essential we update I think.

Sure, if it's about fwrd compatibility then my vote to upgrade too. Better do it now that 2.0 doesnt come with a plethora of add-ons; it should be a smooth install. Unless ofc the word from other users is that it is unstable or something that would justify at least a bcp of the current or two versions in parallel.

I think with any new version of any software you need to decide whether the benefits are there to upgrade, but also to realize if there's any impact on your current infrastructure as well. New software usually carries new features and functions, most likely requiring more resources to run.

- Does your current server have those needed resources to support the new version or do you need to upgrade?
- What will be the impact on the user experience under high load compared to the previous version?
- Can you perform some load stress tests and see the performance hit on your server with the new software?
- Are there any other systems or facilities impacted by the upgrade (if you upgrade the software will it impact the performance of the rest of the website, slow down the browsing under heavy loads, etc?)
- ...

I'm just using the default template that came with SMF.
We of course have access to a multitude of different "themes" to change the look'n'feel of the site, but they are impossible to pick, so I think we'll just stick with this nice looking default template as we did with the old forum.
I'm impressed by the new look too, much more modern.
