SMF 2.0 FORUM UPGRADE COMPLETE!
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:17:06 pm »
As you may have noticed, the forum has a shiny new look due to an upgrade to SMF 2.0, from 1.1.14 we were using earlier.
This new version is a major change in the SMF forum software, but it pretty essential for continued upgrading and maintenance of the forum. I expect the community to drop support for 1.1.XX now that 2.0 is out.

There are database changes that enable a range of new features and functions that were not possible on the new forum.
I am yet to fully explore these, but it means we will have access to a lot of new add-on packages not previously available.

There appear to be a few minor operational differences from the old forum, but basically it should work as per before.

Please report any major problems.

Thanks
Dave.

Sorry everyone, it seems the spammers are getting through with the new installation, as I don't have any anti-spam add-on  measures in place yet.
Bad news is I can't fix it until the simplemachines.org site gets back up, it's been down for hours now!
Hopefully back up when I get up in the morning...

Dave.

I noticed that when you enter a topic with multiple pages, you are taken to the first post. I am not entirely sure, but I think the previous configuration took you to the last post of the topic. This is preferable for topic followers as it means one less click.

The  " karma " thingy it must be removed,
we are also full of opinion,
and such counters they do not help.

If some one gets hammered by the others just  because of his opinion,
what would be the second step ?  Air missiles attack ?

I like the new look  :) ,  and I got surprised for few seconds... and even check my bookmark,
like if had used the right one  :D

The emoticons does not look that good, but this is the last thing that we should care about.

Keep up the good work Dave ..

There are some new configuration options in the member profile. It didn't try them, but one looks as if it does the change you want.

Actually, you can still do that by clicking the icon of folded paper with arrow at the far right, or click the "new" icon to get to the first new, or click the topic subject to get to the start. I think this is great for flexibility, although not so ergonomic with the icon on the end of the row. I always use the new link to put me to the first new post since I last checked.

Right, In account settings there is an option for the latest post to appear first, and I also found that button on the right of each topic. Sorted, thanks!

Ok maybe I'm just blind but the old version had the new icon also next to the timestamp on each post so when I scrolled up and down it was easy to find the ending of old posts and start of new, but I can't seem to find it here, is it gone?

Alternatively they might average out in the long run to a reasonable indicator of whose contributions are generally found to be useful.  They seem to work pretty well for that purpose in other forums.

(Although that said, admittedly my first thought when I noticed it on Dave's test installation of the forum was "this will lead to some fun games" -- so I can see where you're coming from!)

Well the subjects that we get in to conversation in this forum,  bothers me mostly about this function.
If every brand loyal starts to throw negs just because hi dislikes my view.
My own personality it does not matter, even if I am an angel.

Also very few add an positive this days, most people use this function as an way to take their revenge against  to the others.

I rather like the idea of a karma system.  But the implementation (one vote per hour) is terribly open to abuse.  Also it is very unhelpful that it is now a single signed integer, rather than separate plus and minus numbers as it was after the original upgrade.

The users' country flags have also disappeared from alongside their posts.  Although I did not support the idea of users being forced to reveal their country, I certainly do think that the country should be displayed for users who have set it.  It is both interesting and useful.

I agree on that too I want my flag back !!   :)

And the Member bar to become at the half size in thickness.

And the navigation buttons to be visible as text, if you navigate in the forum,
with no image loading in your browser.

And if you set "  Mark all the messages as read ", the browser to return automatically in the forum home page.

Sorry, it looks like the Country setting on everyone's profile didn't get saved in the move.
You'll have the go to your profile and change the country if you want you country flag back.

I got my flag back, there is no problem setting the profile again.
I found and the option to add my testing gear models too.

Something that I did not understood ..  is the karma optional for every user ?
Can I select from somewhere to disable  the  karma in my profile ?

I don't think that's possible, and I checked the add-on packages too.
So it's all or nothing I think.
Perhaps a poll is in order?

Nice,

The only thing about the new interface that doesnt quite work for me is the background color of posts. it alternates between white and almost-white.
Personally i like it better when it's darker and more obvious where the posts start/end. I find the current scheme a little bit bright.

Maybe there is a addon to allow users to pick their own color scheme from a list of a say 3? I've seen that on forums before.

You should be able to select your own theme from the Profile-Modify Profile page.
But they are major theme changes.
I'd have to create entire alternative themes with just a colour change if people only wanted that.

The Home navigation button looks invisible as text, if you navigate in the forum
with no images loading in your browser.

The others like  ..  Help Search Profile are visible because the text color is black.
The "home" button text looks to be white , and so it looks as invisible.

Dave, I take it that there is no way to eliminate the double line "started by Mr. X" bit in the title column?  I think you may have reduced the font size, but it's still bloody annoying. The actual "title" is in a softer color than the "posted by" line, so it's still partly drowned out by the more insignificant information.

I may be overly sensitive to this though.... I'm currently under the gun with "efficiency improvements" in my company.... we're changing to a work method that was found to be inefficient and dangerous 20+ years ago because our new/old management has decided it's more efficient, logic and common sense be damned. And to make matters worse, McDonalds has changed THEIR methods as well.... I had to stand and watch a McDonalds cashier stand there, after having taken my money for a large coffee, and do absolutely nothing, because it was not  her job to actually turn around and get my coffee, anymore........ These new University trained efficiency experts should be informed that an expert is defined as nothing more than "X" is the sign of an unknown,  and a spurt is a squirt under pressure!

I don't see the point in that.
It gives you access to the multi-page direct links, and you have to use two lines any way for the info in the other column, so it's not like it's wasted space. Unless I'm missing something?

I don't mind the karma system, however, I don't think it will be useful.

Alternatively they might average out in the long run to a reasonable indicator of whose contributions are generally found to be useful.

The issue here is found to be useful instead of useful. There are many oh so delicate souls who think the world has to revolve around them. E.g. don't believe datasheets are there to be read but believe the laws of physics don't apply to them. And when they don't get exactly the answer they expect they have a hissy fit. Often decorated with a "you are not helpful" whining.

There will also be the karma whores. Those who give answers that fell good (but are wrong) to increase their karma points.

Regarding the forum in general. There is something I already missed with the old software. A link back to the EEVBLOG. I alway found it funny that the EEVBLOG points here, but one can't easily get back with a single click.

Glad you commented, Bored, yours was actually one of the names I had in mind when I wrote that ;)  My hope was that, with the separate +/- tallies, over time it would show that people who've answered a question with some Uncomfortable Truths have accumulated plenty of thumbs up for knowing their bananas, and many fewer thumbs down from the "that's not the answer I wanted" brigade.  Probably a vain hope, though, especially if they get netted down to one figure...

(Also, having just caught up on new posts, I'm going to agree with ndictu -- the missing (new) icons are really throwing me!)

Ah, some add-on's like the menu title icons will be installed into the default theme only, so may not work on other themes.
I'll see what I can do...

EDIT: Copied the file to all themes manually. Does it work now?

In my experience Karma systems (and their variations) are the biggest source for quarrels on the forums that use them.
There are always some who strive to get the most positive feedback, at all cost. Then there will be some members who get always voted down no matter what they say.

In the end they only indicate who has a following, may it be positive or negative. It's just a variation of the strife for the highest postcount on forums with a large OT section and association games.

Did you add the "Thumbs" before the "UP" in the karma link yourself or was it already like that?

Smells like a little hack :P

Can you imagine Bob Widlar's karma counter if he was with us and was on this forum? Negative overflow on a 32bit counter!  :D

No, I'm pretty certain you couldn't give a stuff for yourself.  But I was thinking of several instances where people have dismissed your posts as just having a grumpy rant about some subject, only to come back a while later and say "oh, it turns out you know what you're talking about".  Hence some indication that someone has historically known what they're talking about could be useful to others in not making the same mistake.

There are those for whom the converse sometimes holds true, of course, and people who simply won't listen to advice they don't like, but just figured that's what these karma systems are intended to address.  I'm sure it's no skin off any useful regular's nose either way.

Dave, I see you have added an extra column and moved some of the "second line" info there.... Thank you! I still find it more difficult to quickly scan the new posts for topics of interest than I did on the previous version of the forum software, but it's bearable now, and if nobody else is having problems, perhaps I just need new glasses or something! :-)

Regards

Christian

I don't see the point in that.
It gives you access to the multi-page direct links, and you have to use two lines any way for the info in the other column, so it's not like it's wasted space. Unless I'm missing something?

Dave.

to

Code: [Select]

But I was thinking of several instances where people have dismissed your posts as just having a grumpy rant about some subject, only to come back a while later and say "oh, it turns out you know what you're talking about".

I tend to ignore threads once it turns out the thread starter isn't listening or doesn't get it, so I usually don't know and I don't care if they come back. In recent times I have started to delete postings if the thread starter isn't listening, in an attempt to keep the threads out of my "Show new replies to your posts" list. Which should help me to ignore the threads I want to ignore. Just yesterday I deleted a reply to a posting from s.mosfet because he couldn't handle a list with more than three items. And we don't want to overwhelm such delicate souls, do we?

But again, from my point of view, if people want a karma system they should get one.

Edit: *ka-ching* Payed with another 23 karma points for this posting. I really start to like the karma system. Keeps certain people busy.

I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.
For all else: Profile->[Modify Profile]Buddies/Ignore List->Edit Ignore List

from my view, we need good people with helpful thought for anyone who ask, but we also need "bad" people to keep their arse moving as well. my 2/100.
