Now you made me curious...
What is happening here? Tell me! Tell me all! I need to read it...! Don't keep it from me!
Please... please... :scared:
-
Is there anything else I can't do for you?
-
There may or may not be a new user by the name of Seppy, who may or may not be the new EEVblog employee, who may or may not now have admin privileges on the forum :scared:
-
Welcome to the forum Seppy, we look forward to your contribution.

He knows what a dropcam is, right?
Tell him to put the laptop is a few inches closer to the door when looking at porn. Yes, that's a joke... but you can see the screen on the dropcam.
-
Everyone should not read the preceding posts as they are meaningless.
Please ignore anything these people write.

The dropcam has been moved slightly to the right... No longer possible to see his two monitors :-)

Forget the monitors... now we can't see dave at the whiteboard and the little bench, so you can't see quite a bit of the space he uses to make videos. I would rather have had the dropcam moved by the door and shoot OVER that desk, so the guy gets privacy and then also its more towards the video area in the back.

Does no Country want him? :-DD

This is correct, I am a renegade :scared:
I look forward to contributions as-well. :)

Spent a couple minutes trying to ensure that engineering porn that may appear from time to time on my monitor isn't available for public viewing ;)
I felt like I should say something in response to the announcement regarding my presence:
Hello, World!

Congratulations Seppy on getting the job, should be a lot of fun and educational, for us as well.

Hello. Welcome. (Not sure what else to say.)

I for one welcome our new robot overlord.
Hi Seppy!
-
Welcome Seppy, whoever you are. Just remember that the Chocolate factory has borged Dropcam, so you need to get the free replacement dropcam from them before the close of the free exchange end February. As Dave will still keep the old one it should be the first teardown of the EEVblog infrastructure.

There is one question that bugs me.
To get the position, did an applicant have to be able to bench more than Dave?

Is that a question about lifting or how much stuff you can pile on a bench?

Both:
You need one to do the other in Dave's Cave...
I mean, when Dave tells you to "move those things there", it's not going to be ONE small Rigol, it's going to be a wall of vintage heavy metal.
And dropping one probably means being a test subject on a "what hurts more, AC or DC?" video.
-
The big question: Does Dave have to inspect the garbage room prior to any trash removal duties to avoid his assistant beating him to something?

Unless it's in the contract as a perk, yes.
-
Is that a question about lifting or how much stuff you can pile on a bench?
Most definitely how much crap can be piled on to a bench. I don't see any signs of the lab being tidied, just crap pilling up on the end of Seppy's desk.
-
I'd fail the "bench test." My dad and I have a terrible avalanche problem, and I don't mean diodes. (I think it's genetic)

Only if you have +2 ignore skills. Otherwise you'll not be able to roll a save, and here you are.

But we ARE ignoring the order to ignore by replying. If we actually ignored it, then we wouldn't know to do anything.

Hello, Seppy. Welcome to the forum. I wonder how long will he last.
-
I have spent a few days successfully ignoring this. I am now testing the thread.
If this shows up, the thread works.
I think I have now done exactly as instructed, in stacked order.
^-^

I am also still ignoring.

Take a box, write "Do not open" on it. See what happens.

I would be a liar if I said that wasn't the first thing to go through my mind.

Sounds more like Hostgator did what Hostgator do best - suck.
-
SO I have to ask....
Why was the forum and the EEV website down for a couple of hours and a half?????
Sorry, but I'd rather not say publicly.
-
Well, it was about 5 hours.
Hostgator, Cloudflare, New change to the website that was pushed and not tested, can be anything because it was a (not found) so maybe as simple as the main folder having the wrong name.

all the chatter on the Siglent disaster thread overloaded the poor server, overheated the processors, and caused it to smoke :scared: :scared: :scared: :-DD At least the halon worked

I was thinking the load placed on the server caused the three hamsters to overwork themselves resulting in two of them having heart attacks and Dave explaining it all to PETA before running to the pet store to pick up three more.

Is it? If it was Hostgator's fault acknowlege it. If it wasn't then why leave them exposed to unjustified criticism? Cue the conspiracy theories.
If the outage lasted several hours then it is unlikely the EEVBlog was alone in being affected if it was a HG problem. Have there been other reports of problems?
Aliens. It's always aliens. :scared: :scared:
-
Is it? If it was Hostgator's fault acknowlege it.
Yes, it was Hostgaters fault. They fixed it very quickly once though once I alerted them to the screwup.
-
Boring. I was hoping for aliens now.
-
I have a good idea of the reason but Dave doesn't want it discussed and I can't say I blame him.
Yup.
I really do want to scream to the world what the problem was, but doing so will just invite further issues.

It was aliens. Tall greys to be precise.

You blame them, but I'm sure it's was beverage and keyboard experiment.

Well, the forum went down again (finally up, yay). :--
I wonder why it keeps getting taken down... :'(
-
Looking at the last post times, the forum was down for a good 8 hours.
Amazing what a permissions problem on the host can break...
-
I remember Dave alluding to some DMCA issue last time it went down. This time it seems the host took all day to type a handful of commands |O
-
Sorry folks, I would have fixed this sonner except I have been rather unwell, I was sleeping at the time Dave contacted me.
It wasnt quite that simple, HG were careful to prevent dave from fixing the problem, they also set the extended immutable and archive attributes after changing the permissions.
I have brought the forums back online, they have NO excuse for this kind of behaviour, let alone the wait in the queue to get it re-enabled.
Here is what they did:
992 2015-11-05 12:50:12 cd ~path/obscured
993 2015-11-05 12:50:13 chmod 0 .
994 2015-11-05 12:50:16 chattr +ia .
995 2015-11-05 12:50:23 ll
996 2015-11-05 12:50:26 chattr -ia .
997 2015-11-05 12:50:30 chmod 0750 .
998 2015-11-05 12:50:33 chmod 0 forum
999 2015-11-05 12:50:36 chattr +ia forum/
Here is my criticisim of these actions:
1) They failed to do it right the first time, they took the entire website down, how unprofessional!
2) They not only made it unreadable, they set the extended attributes so that dave could not fix it.
2) This IMO is damaging a server and I would very quickly move my services away from them, all trust gone.
Here is what I did to bring it back online...
1020 2015-11-05 20:33:18 chattr -ia forum/
1021 2015-11-05 20:33:21 chmod 740 forum/
Really HG... you have to wait for this?
-
Description:
ls -l command is equivalent to ll command . This command is used to get detail information about files and directories in present working directory.
It shows Ownerships and Permissions of files
-
'll' is an alias for 'ls -l', they just listed the directory contents.
I will leave it up to Dave to reply on the nature of the shutdown.
-
I would seriously make sure that the Site, Forum and DB's are all backed up to a remote service (not under Hostgators control),
Possibly even just downloading the Directories and DB Dump every hour or so, to Dave or GNIF's computer.
Then if you need to jump ship, you will still have the latest data (even if they do revoke file access), then all you have to worry about is moving the domain pointers to another host (Hopefully Hostgator are not in control of the Domain records!)

Thanks for fixing that. Yes, Hostgator were in no hurry to do it themselves, even when they said they would escalate it.
Turns out the marketing manager of Hostgator is a fan, so I have direct way in. I will be sending a very nasty email. Hopefully it will get escalated and we'll see what they have to say for themselves.
I understand their need to comply with a DMCA, but taking down the entire forum for complaints over a few posts it beyond acceptable.
In case you want to know what happened, the email request ended up in my spam folder, so they didn't hear back from me and shut down the whole forum after the 3 day grace period.
-

The entire site, forum, files, and databases are backed up daily to Amazon for the last 7 days. Plus monthly and fortnightly too just in case

They are not.

The way they did it was silly, but if you got the email and didn't respond, you can hardly put all the blame for that on them. You run a website this popular and you don't have a spam filter exception set up for the company that hosts it? :-//
-
What was the complaint for?
Alexander.

Alexander.
If I was a guessing man, probably firmware files posted to forum threads.
-
Slightly off the current topic, is anyone else getting this effect below using Windows 7 Ultimate and Chrome, it happens randomly on any page of this forum and other sites I visit are just fine, clearing cache and history makes no difference but a refresh or window re-size seems to clear it.
-
Probably just a graphical glitch, had a lot of those during the lifetime of XP ;)
Hardware acceleration, maybe? Wild guess.
-

I never occurred to me. I get so very few tickets. Never gone to the spam before.

Nope. Someone wanted their quoted posts on the forum removed.

WHAT? Just anybody can complain and get your entire site brought down, with no legal chain?

Did you had to actually remove the quotes?

Gee... I wonder who that someone is?

+1 :wtf:

I just took a quick glance at what DCMA is and I don't understand how it applies to a forum where the person put the content here.
The way it works is, anyone can make a DMCA claim regardless if it's justified or not, and the web host is legally required to remove the content, no questions asked. The process to oppose a DMCA claim is much more difficult and rarely if ever results in penalties for phony claims.
-
Maybe it's time to get a hosting company not located in the US.
-
FYI, my case has been sent up the Hostgator CEO, they know who I am.
-
You are Dave, right?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
-
At this stage anyone else would just dump them for a more professional organisation.
-
I hesitate to make a definitive judgement without all the specifics, but it seems to me that HG contacted Dave to hear his side of the story about some DCMA complaint and when the heard nothing from him after three days they acted. I don't necessarily condemn them for that but making him wait in the problem queue for the "unlocking" is not satisfactory.
Neither is shutting down my entire forum to resolve the issue. They know this and have said it won't happen again.
If not the US where the majority of Daves followers are then where? Australia? Antarctica? that would be cool. Cold even.
US = 20%
UK = 10%
Germany = 10%
Australia = 10%
and down the list it goes.
If I was to move my server it would probably be to the EU.
-
Isn't the DCMA available to Dave too. He may benefit at some point from it in the event his content is "freebooted".
I have used the DMCA before to have a duplicate website shut down, and also fake Youtube channels shut down.
My server does not have to be in the US for me to use the DMCA, it only requires that the server or company the person is using be US based or owned.
-
To avoid DMCA and other problems please could someone confirm that we are OK posting HTML links to other sites including YouTube but we need to be careful posting actual content such as videos and music?

Just posting links to or embedding Youtube videos is fine. You can't upload video or music files to this forum.
