Thanks to posts ratio
« on: February 19, 2022, 10:27:45 am »
I see that everyone now has the amount of thanks they have received under their name and post count. Would it perhaps be more useful to have a thanks per post count? That would normalise the figure regardless of the actual posts count. Mine for example would show as 0.181

It would be nice to have an option to disable that stuff too the same way it is possible to disable user signatures. But it looks like all those extensions don't integrate well with the forum profile.

Actually, it does not matter. It has unique class name, so a simple Stylus rule removes it:
Code: [Select]
li.thankscount
{
    display: none;
}

All depends on what you mean by "useful."   Please explain.

Person 1 has 100 posts and 70 thanks.
Person 2 has 1000 posts and 200 thanks.
At first glance it seems that person 2 likely posts higher quality posts because of the greater thanks count. But it took them a whole lot more postings to achieve that count that person 2.
Useful because you can see at a glance some sort of figure of merit without having to do any mental arithmetic.

I think you are suggesting it's like a signal to noise ratio.
For this forum maybe it's appropriate to display it in dB :P

Even more relevant, I suppose, would be thanks per view.  Presumably, thankers make up some ~constant fraction of the viewers of a given post/thread, no?

Your assertion is purely hypothetical and without any data to support it.

From what I have seen here and elsewhere, the posts with the most thanks are either funny, YouTube or other archival materials, or one side of a controversy (i.e., a mob mentality).  There is no apparent relationship to technical or documentation quality.  Calling it a figure of merit is perhaps accurate in an oxymoronic sense.  The "merit" is unrelated to the principle purpose of this forum.

Why start a new thread about "thanks" when there is already one started by EEVBlog?

Also users who registered quite a while ago will have lower ratio since "Say Thanks" was introduced down the route. IIRC I already had something like 8-10k posts when it was introduced.
