Additional fees when purchasing from EEVblog shop
« on: March 27, 2025, 05:07:19 pm »
I ordered a multimeter from EEVblog store to Europe, paid for the multimeter itself and shipping costs. To pick up the package, I had to pay additional ~20€ at the local post office. I could not find any page mentioning this in advance. Just be aware...

There is a good chance that the EEVblog store does not have a VAT agreement with Europe. This means that you have to pay the VAT at the border on import. On top of this there can be administration costs and like Sorama indicated import duties. Import duties depend on the value of the goods being imported. Depends on what the rules in your country are on how much and above which amount.

Often the collecting of the VAT is done by the postal services and they tend to put a nice fat administration fee on top of it.

This is already in play for some years.

It is indeed forced upon us by the governments. But non European web shops can enlist in the system to collect the VAT on behalf of those governments. In that case one is not bothered by customs and the postmen to fork over extra money.

Aliexpress has this setup so no problems there. We pay our VAT, the government gets its slice so every body happy  >:D  Except us costumers of course, because we just pay more for what we get.

Thanks everyone for the explanation. I would really appreciate if EEVBlog shop put a few words in the vicinity of the checkout page saying something generic like "The total price excludes possible import fees and VAT depending on the destination country".

If those fees aren't included in the price calculation as a line item, then you've not payed them, and you can assume you might have to pay them at a later date.

But I agree he should just add it to the shipping policy to cover his ass: https://eevblog.store/policies/shipping-policy

I ship to 50+ countries, and every country can have their own unique customs requirements. It can even be different at the state level within countries as well.
I have no control or visibility over this, just like any other merchant.
And unlike for example China, Australia and most other countries do not have special international shipping agreements.

Correct. I am not registered in the EU to collect VAT. Only in Australia for GST.

I thought I did have that.
It wasn't in the shopping policy page so I've added that.
