I installed a mod were you can now "Thanks" a poster for making an individual post. There is a thumb up in each post.
I like the concept, and one that can't really be abused like a dislike can.
The most thanked user and the most thanked posts show up in the stats.
Number of thanks also shows up in your profile info on the left.

Yeah, we need likes.

IMO, this just creates more visual noise and will eventually result in people begging for "thanks".

Also, cool and easy way to get my name into every post. I'll just thank every post I see for now

The visual noise part is a matter of personal preference, of course.

But thanks systems do get abused a lot in my experience on random forums that I find from time to time through search.

Just google "begging for thanks on forums" and you will see lots of forums with a topic discussing how annoying this begging is.

Also, on stackoverflow and others begging for points is even more prominent, since it gives some benefits, I believe.

You give people a measurable number and they will want to make it go up.

I think it is a good idea despite any possible drawbacks, it let's posters know if they are making a valuable contribution or just posting waffle.

I am hoping for a 'PAY' button where I can offer money for answers. It would be very difficult to work out the details, but in concept it would be great to offer money when an answer is needed quickly and for commercial gain. I was on an excel forum that tried this but not sure how it worked out or how they did it.

Easy fixed. You beg for Thanks, you get banned.
If it all goes to crap, the feature gets turned off.

No option for it, as shown above.
The code would have to be modified from showing users names, to just showing how many thanked.

The crowd here seems more than classy enough to make good use of it. It's nice to know when a post is useful.

What is an engineering hour go for nowdays? $500 /Hr?

That is about right for a company to charge for a top engineer and cover overhead a profit. A private transaction that is done for extra money could go for a lot less and the engineer would keep all the dough.

There is so much talent here. Most would be willing to demand a lot less than $500/hr and be quite satisfied.

I dislike this.

There are posts with zero replies where a question is asked and the post has already been "thanked".

Next thing is voting I guess? Or maybe sorting posts by how many times they've been "thanked" instead of by date.

The feature is pretty stupid and pointless. And there are no rules against being polite and thanking everyone, are there?

I've been a member of too many forums killed by introduction of karma system. I don't want to look for one more forum, where there are no "likes".
