Why not use a gigabit Ethernet MAC instead?


You have to agree really, the ping times are a lot faster with GBE. Make sure to use a board that uses real Ethernet and especially real interrupts for the NTP (and not filtered through USB like the RPIs up through 3).

Is the difference significant? Opinions vary a lot on this.

You can also get turnkey solutions like this for under $100 from everyone's favourite crapvendor if you just want a black-box ready-to-go NTP server.  Whatever these things are they're pretty sophisticated and not just a ripoff of the Laureline, NTP, SNTP, web UI, and a bunch of other stuff in a device normally costing $1,000 and up.
