Sony opening up a product ....
« on: June 14, 2013, 03:42:11 pm »
OK it's only a fairly simple watch, but with their track record, who'd have expected this....?

I still wouldn't touch anything from Sony. If that thing has any kind of DRM module and if you come close to it with your hacking they will send out the attack lawyers. Sony are wankers at heart, they just can't help it.
I delete PMs unread. If you have something to say, say it in public.

I will definitely trust TI before Sony, and I kind of like that. (Edit: It needs to lose the bigass TI logo, though.)

Still, we have one more contender in the category of Things I Wear on My Wrist:

I have the Chronos and it's not so great, it's mostly just a development tool while Sony's seems to be designed as a wearable. I also have the LiveView (Sony's previous attempt)
Note to wearable manufacturers:
- size: Ti's is bulky, Sony seems even thicker
- battery: Chronos lasts about a day (non rechargeable) with things like wireless and accelerometer turned on
- weather proofing: I would expect to at least withstand hand sweat and temperature variations. Choronos is just a dev tool w.r.t. this
- screen: Chronos is barely readable in daylight. LiveView is almost not readable, the initial plan was to have it display GPS instructions on bike
- connectivity: bluetooth is everywhere, why not use it? TI uses their proprietary CC11xx protocol
- looks: debatable, but the elastic band strap on the LiveView is inexcusable

Still waiting for an open-platform watch that has e-ink (or the Sharp displays) , rechargable/solar power options, BT 4.0 and can be worn without shame.

Obviously a platform that Sony never intended to use DRM on then.
I can't imagine watching movies or playing PSP games on that :)

You mean an SD card in a funny shaped bit of plastic?

They're a bunch of assholes.

I worked at Sony for 6 years, this is the understatement of the year!
