That's new for me, but I am unable to understand How it could be the alternative of Ventilator. You should try modifying it by adding Wifi capability with ESP32.

The helmet like version could be a good alternative for the not so sick patience. It looks like there are 3 steps. First only a more oxygen rich atmosphere, like with the extra tube to the nose. The next point could be a slight overpressure to prevent a collapse and push back fluid a little.  A last stage would be support of the breathing, by changing the pressure as the patient breaths. This may still need quite some effort to the control of the pressure and atmosphere (e.g. control the CO2 and O2 level).

They looked at the patience later needed classical full machine ventilation - so the system seems to be limited. The hard hit ones may still need the full ventilator as a last resort. It can still be a large help, as the muscles are still used. So easier to get off.

A point could also be the mental side, with the choice of
A) fully depending on the machine in an artificial coma
B) or learn breathing inside the small helmet and with the assistance of the machine
Not everybody may be comfortable with the 2nd option though from the logical side it looks less intrusive.  Not everybody is fine with something like a space suite to breath, even if healthy. It could still be more comfortable than a small tight mask.

Basically it's CPAP with oxygen, without the mask constricting your nose and mouth. Only downside is that you're stuck upright.

Its about time that this news is getting out, this has been known for a very long time. Many people end up dying on ventilators. Another thing that helps is "proning" putting people on their stomachs face down, that makes a huge improvement in breathing for some patients. often thats all they need.

We still dont know if resveratrol is helpful either, but recent info out of China is telling us that the plant that its made from, Japanese Knotweed is (Huzhang) now one of the top plants thats being used to treat COVID-19 (up from not even on the list as late as late February) and its behavior is totally consistent with what I have been thinking would happen (it probably inhibits viral replication while acting as a immunomodulator, but the incredible thing is, we still dont know, despite it now being six months since this epidemic started we still dont know if a substance made from a common invasive plant - where every structure-activity and every known fact - all the other things it treats every indication is that it would help, but we still dont know.  Now can people see why I am so cynical and angry sometimes?
