#14 Kenwood TS 50 Capacitors and previous repairs gone bad part 1 Evaluation

In this video we look at a tech special TS-50. What we find is smd caps have leaked on the pcb causing corrosion. Someone tried repairing with through hole caps but ended up ripping traces off the board. Part one I will evaluate the repair and remove parts then clean the board.

In part 2 I will show you how to repair the missing traces the correct way.  Will be doing some heavy cleaning and then cutting small pads and traces out of 1.4 mill copper foil. Then we glue the foil down with some epoxy that can take the heat of soldering. After parts have been replaced I will have to get into trouble shooting mode to find other problems hiding inside.

Shock:
Pity that it had been worked on already, bit of a butcher job, but you never know perhaps it saved some additional damage from leakage.

Are you thinking of temporarily wiring in the replacement parts to see if you can get the unit operational or are do the trace repair first?

You could be right. If the caps continued to leak even more damage could have occurred.

I have performed a lot of test to see what is running in the rig.  So I feel pretty good about it. The main item is the CPU. And from what I see it is working quite well. I will go ahead with the trace repair and component replacement.  Only thing you have to worry about is there one evil unobtainable part that may have failed. Then the repair would be drawn out until a replacement can be found. IC 7 is on that list, but I have one in stock.
