#31 IFR 1200 problems and fixes.

In this video we take a look inside the IRF 1200 Service monitor.
We will address the low output issue from the T/R jack and have a look at the termination dummy load failure. We then pull the scope/analyzer unit and repair the dirty switches.

another nice one, with some voodoo magic boxes  :-+
for cleaning contacts like that and others I use eraser too, but it's not like that from the pencil, it's a white one kinda sintetic ones, they are good to clean computer boards contacts, they are less abrasive and clean very well

like this

Thank Roberto,
I may look into some like that. Less abrasive can be a good thing  :-+
Thanks for that tip.
The IRF is still going. I ran it 14 hour straight and never missed a beat  ;D

Good video; I haven't mucked around in a 1200S in quite a while.
At the time my employer (a local two way radio company) were very greatful to find someone who has some TE repair experience and was not afraid to tackle repairing one of these since it cost a K$ to send one back for repair (before parts).

We had a mix of service monitors;
Some 1200S
Some 1000S / A
I own a 1000S which is a career in itself keeping it running.
We has a pair of Motorola monitors (made by Systron Donner)
I never had to work on those. The only IFRs that needed service save for one were used in the field and got the crap beaten out of them on trips up to repeater sites.

The one thing I liked about the 1200S is a real mechanical engineer was involved in it's design. It is obvious to me no such person was involved in the design of the IFR 1000 series of service monitors.

No worries. It is working like a charm now. All I need is that $200 dollar termination pad. :scared:

Always like hearing stories like that. Seems most folks are just scared to tackle a project like that.
the 1200 is a great piece of test gear. I like them very much.

Another one I like is the HP8640B.  Well made bit of gear and easy to work on.
I need to do some maintenance to mine in the near future.  Having an issue with the audio circuit and the external frequency counter is not working. May tear into it soon.
