EEVblog forum responsive
« on: May 10, 2020, 08:19:51 pm »
I usually read the forum from the smartphone and it becomes quite a difficult task because the forum is not responsive.
I know that SMF does not provide a standard responsive template, but I know of other forums that have adapted their templates with good results.

Some examples:
Todopic:
https://www.todopic.com.ar/foros/
https://www.todopic.com.ar/foros/index.php?topic=47860.msg405894

My forum (I use it like a blog, not like a forum):
https://www.picuino.com/foro/
https://www.picuino.com/foro/index.php?topic=635.msg951

I would like to ask the administrators to adapt the CSS templates of the forum so that it can be read better from the smarphone.

Regards.

Put ?wap, ?wap2, or ?imode at the end of the url.

e.g. https://www.eevblog.com/forum/?wap2

The forum is pretty much unusable on a phone.

it wasn't so bad when you could use tapatalk, but Dave turned that off.
On the plus side, I don't waste so much time here anymore!  :D

Works  well on my 8 years old iphone 5. By default i get the castrated mobile version and always switch to  the full desktop version which is in your screenshot. Don't you get the mobile forum version when starting a new session? Could it be a setting in your browser you may need to turn on?

I've almost exclusively used it with my phone for almost 3 months now on my razer phone 2. I don't know what the problem is.

If there is one thing to praise Dave for, it is for getting rid of the goddamn Tapatalk.  My experience was exactly opposite of yours, it was ridiculosly slow to type and post when Tapatalk plugin was installed on the server but not used by me, as if that stupid thing was giving me a revenge for not using it. After the bastard was gone my tablet is flying now when visiting the forum. It was removed for its annoyance BTW after a public poll.

It's.. not my screenshot.

It may render okay, that's not the same as working fine - zoom in, zoom out, pan all about..

Did I miss anything ? Those are "desktop" view version, which is NOT suitable for small sized screen as in smartphone, cause its annoying that you need to constantly pinch & zoom just to read the text.

To view it in desktop mode, must be at least at tablet sized gadget.

Example on my tablet at portrait mode.

In castrated mode or in wap mode you can't see very useful information and links like "Show new replies to your posts".

In other SMF forums you can see almost everything from your smartphone with a good font size. And nowadays the web experience with the smartphone is quite important.

Example of recent messages in other forum: (https://www.todopic.com.ar/foros/index.php?action=recent)

Same image with EEVblog:
In a small screen you cannot see this small size fonts.

You can also enable and disable the separate mobile theme if you want the pretty version by clicking on these links below. But warning, either bookmark the URLs or remember how to navigate to switch off mobile mode if needed. It's the top right options button, then "Full site" from within the mobile theme.
