Hello All

Just wanted to tell you a little about my high voltage, Tesla coil and general electronics website. 8 years of projects and data :)

It contains schematics, pictures, instructions and videos of 10 Tesla coils of different topologies, a DRSSTC design guide on how to chose components for building such coils. Another 10 smaller high voltage related projects, 3 tube amplifiers, many online electronics calculators like IGBT gate drive, transistor base resistor, MMC calculator and single layer coils. Theory pages with data lists, file archive with a good collection of application notes. General electronics and everyday experiments.

A new article has been added that describes the thoughts, design, construction and test of a very high impedance primary circuit QCW DRSSTC, where the voltage ramp is coming straight from half wave rectified mains supply and a mains synced interrupter is used to trigger at the right interval.

The article covers the fall pits and strange behaviour of Tesla coils driven in this manner.

The project is highly experimental and the results were not as satisfying as expected, but problems with switching transients was a much bigger issues than initially thought of.

Read it all, see all the pictures and view all the videos at: https://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/tesla-coils/kaizer-drsstc-iv/

It's better now, but since you asked, I'll put in my 2-cents... You look a little rigid and need to loosen-up a bit. Also, stop looking up to your right before cutting forward. Fasten your eyes and maybe experiment to see how a brief mischievous eye works for your style (you may not be comfortable with that so try what works for you - but be sure to hold the eyes till the first cut).

Since HV is kind of risky and exiting stuff, a continuity of background beat music is catchy (volume and edge should suite you not anyone else). Raise and lower background volume to not compete with voice-overs and effects. Since it's short, make sure cuts are fast with some light-flash cuts and definitely in-sync with the rhythm. Maybe some help here.

Lastly you may want to cut down, break-up or even lower the long spark sound at the beginning, since noisy intro's get old pretty quick when returning to the channel (but it could be just me the semi-retired schlager musik fan).

Thank you for the feedback.

I know I am a little stiff in it, I think it comes from English being my 2nd language and maybe a little stage freight, handheld camera as I do not even have space for a tripod in the cramped lab :) So I spend too much brainpower on keeping camera still enough, to keep my head in the shot etc etc. I never make a script beforehand, I do retake some scenes, I often feel the big disadvantage of being alone to do both experiments and filming, its hard to do both really good.

I do try to be more happy, less dry in my speech and so on, but damn its hard when it gets technical :)

Problem with music and youtube is that they will almost instantly slam you with a copyright claim, so I just stopped using it, maybe once I build my sequencer/VCOs I can make my own, but it will hardly be any good. Even royalty free music / commercial free music does not go free of this.

I made that splash screen with spark sound as my trademark, as you have seen on many videos, lowering the sound and shortening it to 2 seconds will be tried in the future.

I did some more experiments and teardowns, I also made a new intro splash which is used in these two latest videos

I have been working on getting better audio (external active microphone on DSLR), unless its handheld smartphone recordings and lightning, but a 10 sq.m. lab that contains 9 sq.m stuff really makes things difficult, but I do not want to let that stop me from making videos :)

I bought a house and that is why updates have been rare, as I went into deconstruction/construction mode. I have however made a few small videos along the way to show the progress of moving all the electronics and get settled in a new work shop/lab.

I found a old 3.5" floppy drive cleaning kit and tried it out on a defective computer/floppy drive/floppy that I had. It would constantly ruin "new" disks and leave them with few kb of useful space.

Teardown of a Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio base station. This have been in service as a 3 antenna system for mobile telecommunications.

GSM/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA and LTE capable. 3x90 Watt output power.

Flexi RF Module Triple (FXxx)

The Flexi Multiradio Radio Frequency Module (FXxx) or RF Module, is a 3-branch multicarrier,multi-standard radio transceiver module. The module consists of three independent branches, capable of transmitting and receiving signals of multiple radio technologies concurrently:

Up to 6 GSM carriers with 400 KHz minimum carrier separation
Up to 4 WCDMA carriers with 4.6 MHz minimum carrier separation
Multi-carrier LTE signal with 1.4 MHz, 3 MHz, 5 MHz, 10 MHz, 15 MHz, 20 MHz, and 35 MHz carrier bandwidth
Multi RAT operation with combination of GSM, WCDMA, and LTE

The RF Modules FXDA, FXDJ, FXEA, FXCA, and FXFA/ FXFB are referred to as 70W RF Module variants. RF Modules FXEB and FXDB are referred to as 90 W RF Module variants. Each branch consists of a transmitter and two receiver chains. FXxA and FXFB (70W) variants have front end software tunable filters (STuF). 90 W RF Module variants have fixed full band filters. FXxx is a 3U high module with an integrated, replaceable 3-fan assembly for module cooling. The supported functions are:

Chaining up to three RF Modules with OBSAI RP3_01
2-way receive diversity in the receiver chains
    Integrated antenna line supervision
MHA, Antenna Hopping, EGPRS2, and VAMOS support
Digital and control circuitry, optical interface, DC/DC power conversion, and other necessary functionalities
Integrated DC line OVP, Class II rated to 5kA pulse (FXFB, FXDB/FXEB)
Remote Electrical Tilt (RET) support (FXFB, FXDB/FXEB)

Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE modules are equipped with an integrated air guide plate providing full thermal compliance without casings. This allows installation of the modules without casings in Flexi cabinets and enclosed 19″ racks. Casings and covers are recommended in standalone 19″ racks (no cabinet) for safety reasons. Casings are not part of the FXxx delivery package. If the configuration requires casings, Flexi BTS Module Casing (EMHA) kits must be ordered.

The Flexi Multiradio RF Module variants are:
Version    Description
FXDA     GSM 900 (E-GSM) 70W
FXDJ     GSM 900 J-Band (P-GSM for CDMA co-siting) 70W
FXEA     GSM 1800 70W
FXCA     GSM 850 70W
FXFA/FXFB GSM 1900 70W
FXDB     GSM 900 (E-GSM) 90W
FXEB     GSM 1800 90W

Test with using regular mineral wool for house insulation, to insulated the work coil in order to achieve higher steel temperatures.

Here is another try, just with horizontal instead to contain some more heat, accidentally melted some plastic on the enclosure from that

I needed a 50A current meter for the 1800W induction heater ( https://highvoltageforum.net/index.php?topic=530.0 ), but had none with the proper scaling. I do however have a large box of 1mA blank scale meters, so I decided to do a video on the following topics:

- Learn how to calculate the shunt resistor for your analog panel meter
- Guesstimate the internal resistance of a unknown meter
- Design custom scales if you have a blank meter or want to use a meter for another purpose than its original.

The HP T-620 Thin Client is a powerful little machine, that with ease can be hacked into using a random 19VDC PSU and run Windows as any normal PC, easy and cheap PC!

This thin client was thrown out, without anything else than the box itself, no power supplies, no nothing.

The port and connector layout from the manual shows that the HP T-620 models needs a 19VDC power supply. A little searching showed that it was not as simple as just supplying it with 19VDC. HP has put in a few tricks to make a "smart laptop charger" so that you can only use their chargers.

The "smart laptop charger" restriction can be bypassed with a simple current limiting hack as per this little schematics. All credits for this hack goes to:  http://nerdipedia.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Smart+laptop+charger

Aethra CCD Webcam Teardown - From Back When Streaming Was Expensive!

This is a Aethra Colour CCD #Webcam that was part of a system made for remote #medical diagnose / consultation for patients in remote locations.

The system was mounted in a car to be mobile, so a driver could visit patients and make a call to the doctor do complete the consultation within the patients home. The system was driven by a #embedded PC with a complete circuit for the interface, audio/video and running all peripherals on a RS232 daisy chain. The whole setup used some kind of GSM link to transfer the video and audio signal, seemed to be a very expensive and complex setup.

Before you buy a DSO138 or DSO150 from ebay, amazon, wish or aliexpress, it is important to understand what you are getting. The specifications are very loosely written and what looks good on paper is useless in practical use. Here I test the DSO138 specified at 200 kHz, but in reality it is worthless above 20 kHz.

Buying the right oscilloscope is knowing your work area limits and where it might be in the future. I recommend that you read: 12 things to consider when choosing an oscilloscope: https://www.mouser.com/pdfdocs/Tektronix12_things_to_consider1.pdf

This is the unboxing of a Anet A8 3D prrinter that was bought for my father to experiment with. Hopefully this will give some good help to make parts for electronics as part of the diy way of life :)

Following videos, in the future, will be about upgrades to the printer and test of its printer capabilities.

This is the first upgrade for the Anet A8 3D printer. A new powersupply from a HP server will be a fire-hazard reducing upgrade compared to the original undersized and over-specified power supply that came with the printer.

12V @ 62A is of cause much more powerful that needed for the printer, but this will keep the fan spinning at minimum speed. You do not want to be in the same room as a server power supply running at full current output with maximum fan spin. It is like a jet engine.

This is part 1 of my #diy #led flood light that is going to be used for high speed video filming with the FPS1000HD camera.

It is being built form 5x 50W LED COBs mounted on old Pentium4 CPU coolers.

I got no affiliation with these sellers, but it is where I bought my parts:
50W LED COB chips: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50-W-Watt-LED-Chip-kaltweiss-24-40-mil-4500-Lm-6000K-kw-COB-Fluter-Flutlicht/162464897645?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

This is part 2 of my #diy #led flood light that is going to be used for high speed video filming with the FPS1000HD camera. It should be able to deliver around 20000-25000 Lumen.

Here I modify 3x HP server power supplies to deliver 36VDC, add fan controllers for the heat sinks and box it all up in a "very compact" box that can be handheld.

This is part 3 of my DIY LED flood light that is going to be used for high speed video filming with the FPS1000HD camera.

In this video the lux value is measured to 25000 at 1 square meter which corresponds to the given lumen value for the LED COBs.

The 36VDC power supply ripple is examined, the 50 Hz ripple is limited to around 1VDC and the high frequency 20-45 kHz switching noise is no apparent problem.

There is some flicker in the background when recording at 1000 and 4000 FPS, but once it gets up to 8000 and 20000 FPS, there is not enough light to even get the subject properly lit up.

I prefer to put it on the ground and crawl into, I think it is homemade and made from a large gauge wire or one that was used in full contact medieval combat sports, would explain why it was ripped and thrown out. That is a pretty violent sport. I recorded some fights in a tournament back in 2016, crazy people coming out with concussions and broken arms/legs etc.

Only lurking from the side as well, I can handle high voltage and currents, but I have no desire to take a two-hand sword to my neck  :scared:

Also I finally found a cheap barebone bluetooth amplifier for my work shop that is actually work listening to.  :-BROKE

I wanted a small Bluetooth amplifier for my work shop and bought some cheap bare-board versions from Ebay. This TDA7498 design is over-advertised, but not as bad as other cheap bluetooth amplifiers from ebay.

Test, frequency response and THD+n measurements show how good it compares to the promised performance of the TDA7498 datasheet.

Congrats sir! I don't know who is updating our resources list these days, but I will check around to see what's up.
I have 8 of these Hicon 6800uF @ 250v but stringing all them in series for 2 KJ is too scary for me!

A couple of Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) nested outside my work shop in one of our many bird boxes, put up to attract birds to our garden. A good 3 or 4 weeks went on with day in-and-out feeding of the young before the left the nest a week ago.

Teardowns on the inside of the workshop, new life on the outside :)

100$ Thermal Camera With 32x32 Pixel. HTi HT-02D Unboxing And Test
« Reply #59 on: June 27, 2020, 11:53:41 am »
There is a huge difference from the very cheap 8x8 pixel thermal cameras, to the 32x32 and up to the 160x120++. The price seems to quadruple with the pixel count. In this video I am testing the HTi HT02D Thermal camera that I was able to get at 100$ on offer. This is not a paid/non-paid advertisement, my own money, test and conclusion.

Best bet to find these at a decent price is to run through ebay and send off a lot of "make offer" of 100$ on the 150-200$ auctions. But is it worth it? Lets find out!

I came by a discarded full size Dell PowerEdge M1000E server rack. Full SAN, 2 large blade servers, 4 or 6 backbone switches, all power supplies and fans. This is a system that is about 8-10 years old and had a new price of around 1000000 DKR (166666 $US).
It was all unloaded in a big mess into a container and I only had time/space to take a blade server, all power supplies and fans with me. Hard disks all go to destruction and backbone switches and the M1000E cabinet itself is too big and clumsy to have any real value in the work shop.

A guide on how to make the, HP DPS-800GB Rev. A, server power supply run outside of its server enclosure.

A simple bridge between pin 31 and 34 is required and it is important to NOT drill holes through the GND and +12VDC output pads, this will risk short-circuiting the output as its a 4-layer PCB.

This is 9! 12V/7A server fans built into a fan cluster with handles! It is time to wreck some havoc and play with fire and smoke!

I did not realize just how much fire was sucked through the fans until after I saw the photage. As seen in the pictures on the forum link there was some bad damage to the fan blade and wiring. It actually short circuited the DC rails from the fence melting through the insulation. It is also very good at cleaning the work shop floor.

Discussion of the fan cluster project with pictures: https://highvoltageforum.net/index.php?topic=1170.0

The old rotten and leaking workshop wall and door appeared to be installed on top of an even older rotted wall. It was time to do it properly, I broke everything down and built a new wall with fiber cement, insulation and some proper wood panels on the inside.

This is a teardown video of a 5 zone induction stove with a total power consumption of about 10 kW.

The induction stove is built up on standard 2-zone modules that are likely used in their 1,2,3,4 and 5 zone models, so just mix and match to get the number of zones needed. For a single zone induction zone, a 2-zone PCB is used and only one of the power electronics sections are populated, all control electronics is still in place.

All pictures of details can be seen at: https://highvoltageforum.net/index.php?topic=1270.0

I got very little problems with spammers on www.highvoltageforum.net it has only been the usual Russian IP accounts that has been effectively stopped with bans, came from a few single sources, so was easy to get that sorted.

My 2021 New Year resolution is to do annual battery checks on all my battery powered instruments. I found batteries as old as 13 years over expiration date that had also started to leak, but much less defective batteries than expected.

Thank you for following Kaizer Power Electroncis in 2020. See'ya next year!

2000 kg (4395 lb) would be the weight of the AC motor that this 630 A / 440 kW contactor can turn on and off. This also explains the shear size of this contactor, a almost solid piece of metals, copper coil, iron core, copper terminals, platinum contact points and aluminium enclosure.

Building large flight cases and transport boxes is easy and much cheaper than buying them. Hinges, locks, fittings and aluminum rails is readily available at almost all audio / light retailers of equipment for disco, clubs and festivals. I share the tips on how to construct it in a simple way and make sure you get parallel edges that looks good when the boxes are locked together. With so many different rails, hinges and locking mechanisms it is easy to make a mistake and mount something off-center or with distances that does not take aluminum rail thickness into account. The stencil template, I show how I made in another video How To Make a Stencil For Spray Paint With Cheap Hand Tools

In this video I show you how I built 3 boxes in total at a cost of around 300$, two very large flight cases for my secondary coil and topload. The third box is a cable and equipment box that is just made from the leftover plywood from the two large cases.

I am building a Tesla coil show controller that can control up to 6 Tesla coils at once. It will feature individual interrupters, touch screen controlled MIDI interrupter, safety features to ensure a safe method of working with the Tesla coils before a show, under a show and after a show. It will all be housed in a transportable 19" rack mount flight case for ease of transportation and to protect the electronics.

The 6 channel MIDI interrupter is the feature rich Syntherrupter made by Max as he shares all the plans, documentation, code and schematics.

The users and readers that know about my Tesla coils will know that I "only" have a small Tesla coil, a medium Tesla coil and a large Tesla coil. So how does this correspond with building a show controller that can take up to 6 coils at once? Well, I just have to build some more Tesla coils :)

Due to time constraints due to things like life, work, education and more or less sleep, this project is split into some smaller phases.

Part 1 - The parts
Part 2 - Programming Syntherrupter
Part 3 - 6 outputs build
Part 4 - Syntherrupter and MIDI
Part 5 - Interrupters
Part 6 - Power supply and safety

Part 1 - The parts
I bought 19" transportation rack, panels, power bar and some other parts for the previously released video about flight case construction. I bought it from the German company Adam Hall that is a supplier to many smaller retailing companies of disco, event and show business equipment like audio, light and transportation gear.

The stock cooler for my i7-4970K CPU fell off due to a broken plastic holder, I am not sure when it happened, but my PC had been really slow for a couple of weeks and I was contemplating an upgrade as this PC is from 2009!

I think I have upgraded the graphics card, added more RAM and a SSD since it was first built. So as today it still sports a 4GHz i7-4970K, 16 GB RAM, MSI Z97 motherboard and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970. 250GB SSD boot drive, 1TB backup and 2TB storage. Corsair RM550 Watt PSU. All installed in a nice sound-reducing Antec cabinet as well as the TB drives are installed in noise reducing blue drive bays seen at top.

Please do leave suggestions for a new PC build :) Good performance on a budget!

The "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" is a dance for a ballerina. It is the third movement in The Nutcracker pas de deux. This pas de deux is from Act 2 of the 1892 ballet The Nutcracker. It is danced by the principal female dancer. The number was choreographed by Lev Ivanov to music written by Tchaikovsky

MIDI/Music interrupters you can build yourself:
4 channel polyphonic MIDI Tesla Coil interrupter
(Used in this video)
1 channel compact/simple USB MIDI Tesla Coil interrupter
1 channel analog audio Tesla Coil interrupter</p>

I got hold of two electrical panels with a bad wiring job, worst documentation and completely out of code (racing fast for illegal).

The did however turn out to contain a gem of lost times. A "Speed Commander", which is a Danish designed and produced 4 kW motor drive with a very simplistic interface consisting of only 16 settings. The manufacturer still exists ( https://speed-tech.dk/ ) but does not seem like they are selling motor drives anymore, there is a only a trace after it in the manuals section with refences to a V4 and V5. This is most likely the version 4.

I got hold of a large Merlin Gerin Masterpact M16N1 circuit breaker, from 1997, from a low voltage distribution drawout system. In the video you get a inspection of the various parts of the breaker and I have some fun making it work and test it!

This is a Merlin Gerin Masterpact M16N1 Circuit Breaker rated at 1600A/690VAC (Roughly 1.9MW 3-phase energy!) I do a short inspection of the different parts of the breaker and make attempts to operate it outside of its normal environment. For all schematics, pictures and how I got it to work, can be found described in details in the discussion thread: https://highvoltageforum.net/index.ph...

The Masterpact M series circuit breaker is used to protect and control low voltage distribution systems. It can be installed in main LV switchboards (incoming units, main and secondary outgoers).
Nominal current: 800 to 6300A AC
Breaking capacity from 40 to 150 kA rms
Voltage rating: up to 690 V
Versions: 3 and 4-pole. Fixed or drawout.

--------------------------------------------------

This is the circuit breaker filmed at 4000 frames per second!

A pulse discharge with a peak current of 50,000 Ampere is send through a Siemens Simatic S5-110 PLC CPU. The S5 series was released in 1979 with the 110 CPU being in the middle of the CPU range. I have spent countless hours on factory floors with my Siemens laptop, the FIELD PG, troubleshooting and programming this PLCs. PG is shor for the German word "PROGRAMMIER GERÄT" which is a programming device. I am tearing a hole in the universe, to bring my old fond memories back, by utilizing a super hot plasma discharge to eject the EEPROM!

A pulse discharge with a peak current of 50,000 Ampere is send through a Sonos Connect. If your audio keeps skipping, stopping or generally playing up, you could have an issue with wireless interference from other devices in your home. One way to reduce this interference is to switch 90MW of energy through your Sonos system.

A pulse discharge with a peak current of 50,000 Ampere is send through a Samsung Galaxy Google Nexus mobile phone. The Galaxy Nexus (GT-I9250) is a Android smartphone co-developed by Google and Samsung Electronics. It is the third smartphone in the Google Nexus series, which received good reviews as the best Android phone in 2011 and in 2021 it received a giant plasma discharge.

Bonus info: If you look closely at the bottom left corner at 1:10 during the slow motion video, you can see one of the terminals being shot out of my pulse capacitor. This is the last video of pulse discharges, until I have a bigger and better capacitor :)

« Reply #116 on: October 09, 2021, 12:28:29 pm »
The ALTIVAR 58 (ATV58) family of adjustable frequency AC drive controllers is used for controlling three-phase asynchronous motors. This controller in from the range of: 1–75 hp (0.75–55 kW) constant torque (100 hp variable torque), 400/460 V, three-phase input. In this teardown, I am giving you an overview of how its built, non-destructively as the unit works fine and will find a new home/be used.

Telemechanique was acquired by Schneider Electric in 1988, and in 2009, 21 years later, all the brands was adopted into the Schneider Electric portfolio and Telemechanique was no more.

In this video I install and test the analog audio interrupter and gives a walk-through on how I am using it.

The analog interrupter audio input is quite simple and build up around a single LM339 op-amp. It has a toggle switch between normal BPS interrupter output and the op-amp output. The potentiometer is a frequency bandwidth limiter setting somewhere between allowing a maximum frequency from 100 up to 500 Hz. Overall on-time is still limited by the normal potentiometer for on-time adjustment.

This Cisco headend/hub RF combining and splitting networks is used in Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial networks. HFC is a telecommunications industry term for a broadband network that combines optical fiber and coaxial cable. Advanced HFC networks include numerous 2-way interactive services that have changed the requirements for the configuration and flexibility of the systems.

Victron Energie Atlas Combi 12V/800W Battery Charger/Inverter Teardown
« Reply #119 on: December 25, 2021, 02:17:47 pm »
I do a teardown and test of a Victron Energie Atlas Combi 12-800. It is a combined battery charger and 230VAC inverter. The battery charger of the Atlas Combi is suitable for a 230 VAC, (50 Hz) mains voltage. The charger works automatically, so batteries may remain permanently connected to the charger, even during winter storage. The Atlas Combi is suitable for starter batteries and semi-traction batteries of the lead/acid type in open or sealed designs. The inverter converts the 12 VDC into 230 VAC, 50 Hz.

Circuit analysis, reverse-engineering and hacking of a Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Multiradio base station FRGL amplifier. The user Da_Stier from highvoltageforum.net made a deep circuit analysis of the power amplifier, reverse-engineered how it works, built new printed circuit boards to make it run standalone and built a new enclosure for it. Shifting its output frequency band from 2.1 GHz to 2.4 GHz, for us in HAM radio experiments.

This is a short teardown of the smallest UPS I have yet found thrown out. The Belkin Regulator PRO Silver UPS 650VA (model F6C650-SER-SB) uses the battery type CSB HC1221W which has been discontinued. It features: UPS / surge protector, 4 power outlets, Fax / modem protection, 650VA output power capacity and has 25 minutes back-up time. Its weight: 953grams, Colour:  Black Silver and Size: 225mm x 180mm x 60mm.

If not obvious, my daughter helped me make this video :)

I bought this 6 A variac stack as advertised for 6A. But the physical size suggests it could be a 10A model as well. There is no part numbers or data shields to go by. Variacs are usually rated to be able to handle 200% overload for up to 5 minutes and 300% overload up to 1 minute. As the lids and housing was missing, it needed to get built into a new enclosure. In this video I install and test the safety features. A lot of the original plan to have the safety relay in the show controller has changed and instead turned into a separate project, with building a soft start safety box that receives a special emergency signal from the controller.

A encoded signal (666 Hz) is sent over fiber optical link to a soft start safety box (bandpass filter from 400 to 1100 Hz) where a industrial grade safety class circuit is made to cut off mains supply to the Tesla coils in case of a malfunction in the monitored circuit or a pressed emergency stop.

Tesla Coil Show Controller Soft Start Safety Box
« Reply #132 on: July 15, 2022, 07:48:47 pm »
The first version of my soft start box for 3 phased 400 VAC loads was just that, a soft start box. I wanted to include safety features like fault detection and emergency stop, but I also wanted to remain galvanically isolated from the mains supply, as it is the case with the interrupters and controllers that used a fiber optical link. First I want to design a fiber optical link with a encoded signal, so that only a specific signal would make the safety circuits resettable. Secondly I also want it to be tolerant to failures, miswiring and if there is a fail, it should fail to a safe state.

Teardown of DLP Projectors With 15 Years Between Them

Test, teardown and comparison of two DLP projectors. The Vivitek WD755 is from around 2013 and the older InFocus is from around 1998. They are both based on the Texas Instruments DLP chipsets and the technology and space it takes up, shows that there is little difference in the physical size, but the higher resolutions is solely found in the smaller sized digital micro mirror devices.

TIG & Stick Welder, Migatronic Pilot 1800 Teardown
« Reply #137 on: October 19, 2022, 05:48:50 pm »

A teardown of a Migatronic Pilot 1800, a combined TIG & stick welder. TIG is short for Tungsten Inert Gas and refers to the tip of the welding handle, which is made out of tungsten. A inert gas comes from the handle, to surround the tip and ensure no air is near the welding bath. This machine can also do stick welding ( Shielded Metal Arc Welding ), which is the same principle, but the way of protecting the welding bath from air is by a layer of flux around the metal stick being deposited into the weld.

In this teardown video, I give a run down of the current paths in the system and I show which parts I kept.

Cisco Cable TV Optical Node and RF Amplifier Teardown
« Reply #138 on: November 06, 2022, 01:44:23 pm »
Teardown of Cisco / Atlanta Scientific Cable TV optical node and drop amplifier. These are modern versions running on fiber networks. These small amplifiers are used in houses where it is not practical to use a receiving antenna to get the signal from the broadcast headend transmitter. They are also called a "service drop". Historically CATV is short for Community Antenna TV. A large receiving antenna was used and a cable connection ran out to every house in the neighborhood. Each house had one of these amplifiers. The return path amplifier can also send some of the signal back into the line to keep the signal good enough for the next house. In Denmark, the large receiving antennas has mostly been substituted with fiber connections.

This video also goes through how I generally reverse-engineer power supply interfaces of server power supplies.

To reverse-engineer a power supply interface by trial-and-error, finding the GND pads and connecting them to other pads through a 1K or 10K resistor is a safe way to probe for possible start up conditions.

« Reply #155 on: November 12, 2023, 06:30:57 am »
I found a complete Philips Medio 50 CP-H system consisting of 2 meter tall 19″ rack with computer, driver, inverter and high voltage tank. Dual X-ray tube head rated for 150 kV and a control desk. It was only possibly for me to take the control desk with me. No effort was done for the driver, inverter and high voltage tank, as it was from the 1990’s and SCR based inverter design.

Server PSU Hack - Dell N870P / NPS-885AB. 12VDC 71A 870W

A video guide on how to make the, Dell N870P / NPS-885AB, server power supply run outside of its server enclosure. Through trial-and-error I found that a simple circuit of 1K resistor from ground to pins 6A and 6C is required.

I found a discarded welding machine in a scrap yard! It might be an older shielded metal arc welder, also known as SMAW or stick welder. But from what my father told me, these old ESAB machines are impossible to destroy. It got a good new home :)

Technical walk-through and demonstration of spark generation from my first dual resonant Tesla coil. I finished this dual 811A vacuum tube Tesla Coil back in late 2008, which dates this back 15 years by now! At the time I finished this coil, my best camera at the time, could only record in 640x480 with horrible noise in dark surroundings. This video is the walk-through and demonstration video I wanted to make 15 years ago, but got done now :)

Smoke Screen Machine Protect 950 XP - Teardown of a Smoke Cannon!
« Reply #162 on: March 22, 2024, 09:42:03 pm »
I found a old and discarded smoke cannon at a scrap yard! It looked in rough shape, but still had some oil in its container. With a bit experimentation and at last forcefully feeding it oil, it gave off its smoke!
As a bonus, I got most of my workshop lubricated from half-burned oil smoke raining down droplets everywhere!
