S. Petrukhin:
It is difficult to achieve good quality with the help of an smoothing-iron, it is unlikely to achieve FR4 without a lot of experience.
Somewhat more complicated, but much better quality can be obtained using a photoresist.
And to fix the toner after transfer, you can wet it with acetone.  :scared:

george.b:
I've never achieved good results using plain paper. It seems to me that the paper fibers tend to get stuck on the toner more easily, and that leads to worse results than using glossy paper. In my experience, at least.

Also, when etching, I let the board float face down on top of the ferric chloride solution, so I don't need to keep stirring it.

I've never tried the acetone method. Seems interesting.

Chinese friends sell on aliexpress glossy slippery paper specifically for irons. It is similar to the one that serves as the base for self-adhesive paper.
But the iron technology is ugly, very simple boards. Even using a photoresist will allow you to do better and apply a mask and silkscreen. And all this is for enthusiastic people who like the process itself, for whom it is a vacation. Industrial production of boards from Chinese friends is already very cheap.
