It must be 2020s, if people are focusing more on these aspects of the article and not the very calm and civilized tone Linus uses! I suppose now I can count myself among the ancients who recall the famous rants.

There comes a time in parents’ life when they need to accept the kid has grown up, and have to let the child interact freely with the world, while offering support.
There comes a time in project author’s life when they need to accept they can’t control every line of code (= develop), and have to let the project be developed by others, while overseeing it (= project lead).
The natural order of things.

If after 35 years Linus was still an important workhorse in Linux, it would be very unhealthy for both sides.


The part about Rust is the ever-repeating echo of similar words about other programming environments across the years. My last language before I got retired was Java and in 2010 I’d say something along the same lines. Don’t be excited about the garbage collector: you’re still left with every single other resource which JVM isn’t going to manage for you.⁽¹⁾ Even GC didn’t prevent careless YOLO programmers from notoriously creating memory leaks. 🤦

⁽¹⁾ Try-with-resources has only been introduced in 2011. It’s not covering all cases still.
