VS Code for Microchip PIC development

Hi,
has anybody used VS Code (NOT Visual Studio) for writing code for PIC controllers?
If so, is it easy to setup?
Do you then compile using MPLAB?
Does it work ok with the source files being open in both MPLAB and VSCode at the same time?
