GPS Week Epoch Approaching. 6/4/2019
« on: February 13, 2019, 08:35:09 am »
Article linked below, but basically we're about to run out of weeks for GPS because the protocol only allows for a 10 bit number to describe the GPS week so if your GPS receiver has a dodgy week handling procedure then you may be in trouble...

I'm pretty sure the Timenuts will be well aware of this but for those of us here who aren't as 'timenutty' and rely on GPS receivers for various things, be aware and keep an eye out for odd behaviour

Note that this is the third rollover, so we've been through this before.

Most hardware designed by companies around for the last one have a mitigation that assumes any week number that is less than the firmware build date likely means a rollover has happened, so it tends to only be very old recievers that break, and then slowly as they age out.

Absolutely, a lot of modern receivers will handle it gracefully and there will be no problem for them, I hope mine will too but I will be watching (or logging at least) to find out.

I might have to dust off my Motorola VP Oncore receivers for the ROFLs... not sure what they do at week roll.
