Project idea, peltier/seebeck powered watch
« on: March 17, 2015, 08:51:27 am »
Hi,

I'm wondering why haven't anyone powered a semi-"smart watch" from a peltier/seebeck element? It's been a while, since I saw Daves video on energy harvesting, but as far as I remember, he got enough power to atleast power a small micro and one of Sharps memory displays.

I'm building a prototype to test things out, but has anyone some info they would like to share?

I'm not sure how much power you can really get out of the small surface area of a watch but I know there has been this project on Hackaday a while ago: http://hackaday.com/2013/12/02/energy-harvesting-peltier-ring/

He basically just lit up an LED with a peltier module and a DC-DC boost converter.

Also working on similar watch, but I need power up to 3 leds (ok.they can be PWMed and supercapacitors used to charge them when display is deactivated I do not need them lighting all the time, just to check time when needed  8)

OK, we have 0.3V @ 20*C temp difference, but what about short circuit current-I mean power?
Need to watch again @Dave teardown.

The tiny Peltier plate he found generates about 0.3V with a temperature differential of about 20C — not bad...

The room has to be fairly cool for the LED to light, but [Sean] definitely proved his concept.
Probably it could better with much higher cooling area of watch holder or in swimming pool or while running or riding a bicycle.
Anyway, place such thing on two fingers much more difficult than at least 1inch2 watch surface with additional watch holder area looks like it can work  :-/O
