Help! Russian Datasheet translation VFD ILV-M2 5/7
« on: October 24, 2015, 09:12:25 am »
Hi,

Got a russian VFD display that i like to play around with. I only got a russian datasheet for it and since my knowledge in russian is very poor i need some help.
I manage to get some data from google translate and som wild guessing. But there are some question marks still.

This is what i got so far from the datasheet.

PIN 1: segment line 1, red
PIN 2: cathode
PIN 3: segment line 2, red
PIN 4: grid column 2
PIN 5: segment line 3, red
PIN 6: grid column 3
PIN 7: segment line 4, red
PIN 8: segment line 5, red
PIN 9: grid column 4
PIN 10: segment line 6, red
PIN 11: cathode
PIN 12: segment line 7, red
PIN 13: segment line 7, green
PIN 14: cathode, wire???? filament???
PIN 15: grid column 5
PIN 16: segment line 6, green
PIN 17: segment line 5, green
PIN 18: segment line 4, green
PIN 19: segment line 3, green
PIN 20: segment line 2, green
PIN 21: grid column 1
PIN 22: segment line 1, green

red segment 50V
green segment 25V

green segment 4mA
red segment 6mA

filament 2.8V/4.5mA

Am I missing some crutial information? This is the first time i use a VFD display so I do not know excatly what data is needed to get this diplay running without breaking it.

If some with knowlege in the russian language is willng to help, it will be much apreciated.

Original data sheet was found here:

Thank you,

Next question; am I understanding it correct that the grid voltage shalll be 25V? By grid i mean pin 4, 6, 9, 15 and 21.

Indication type: dot matrix
Color: red, green
Matrix type: 5x7 (5x14)
Brightness:
  red 700 kd/m^2
  green 250 kd/m^2
Brightness non-unifority: 60%
Brightness, old/worn display:
  red 140 kd/m^2
  green 60 kd/m^2
Size:
  visible area 30x45 mm
  pixel 2x2 mm
Area of emitting parts: 48mm^2
Number of emitters: 70
Visible angle: 45 deg
Start-up time: < 0.1 s

Filament voltage: 2.8 V
Filament voltage allowed: 2.5-3.1 V
Grid negative OFF voltage: -5 V min
Grid voltage: 25 V
Pulsed anode voltage:
  red 50V max
  green 25V max
Filament current: 225 mA
Filament current range: 200-250 mA
Current of all pixels of one column:
  red 4 mA
  green 6 mA
Grid current: 4.5 mA

Filament on/off cycles before fault: 10000
(duty 1:5)
Ambient temperature: -45..+70 deg C
Time before fault: > 20000 h
The difficult we do today; the impossible takes a little longer.

These VFD displays are basically triodes. The cathode is common, grids and anodes are multiplexed.

Apply 2.8V 225mA to the filament. You'll able to see the filament lighting weak red in the darkness. Then, apply a positive (with respect to the cathode) voltage to both the grid and the anode. Anything about 20V should be fine; most displays work well even at 9V. The maximum allowed voltage is 50V for red segments and 25V for green ones and grids. So just choose 24V.

If the anode voltage is high enough, the anode may happen to emit light even with zero voltage on the grid. In this case you may need to apply negative voltage to the grid. The datasheet guarantees that -5V is enough to dim the segment.

It is safe to apply negative voltages to anodes. This suggest the possible connection: grids and anodes to outputs of 24V logic, and cathode to +5V. This gives -5..+19V range which should be fine. It may even work with 40xx series ICs with 15V or 18V power, just with reduced brightness.
The difficult we do today; the impossible takes a little longer.
