Looking for RF component kits for 2.4GHz antenna matching
« on: December 19, 2014, 09:15:34 pm »
I am new to antenna impedance matching. I have a board with 2.4GHz Wifi antenna and think I need special (high-Q) RF components for antenna matching. Can anyone recommend a cheap 0201 RF (high-Q) component kit containing with inductors capacitors? (and resistors) Please tell me brand, give me links to Digi-Key, ebay or amazon. Thanks

What kind of antenna? pcb antenna? what do you have to work with to tell if you have a good match? swr meter? SA/TG and a return loss bridge?  VNA? You can search on digikey for kits, there is a ton of capacitor ones that are meant for RF, and 495-1684-ND looks like a reasonable SMD inductor kit, with the SRF of most the components being higher then 2.5 GHz.

There's no need for hi Q parts, ordinary C0G caps are fine.

Use coilcraft inductors, you can buy directly from them.

Some Manufacturers - Johanson, Wuerth eisos - have design kits which might fit.
(Wuerth offers free refill, dont know about others)

I'm not a feature, I'm a bug! ARC DG3HDA

It's very rare I go down to 0201, usually I target 0402. A few years ago I purchased a full set of 2% wirewound Abracon parts in 0402 up to about 10nH or so and then up in sizes as necessary when the Q drops off. They weren't in a kit, I just bought strips of 50 of each value and put them in a folder. I am sure you can do the same for 0201, but watch the Q dropping off. You will have to buy wirewound if you want high Q, the multilayer equivalents are low Q although generally a fraction of the price of WW.

One comment about Coilcraft, is that while they are good parts, they can give you a BOM shock.
