Title: 8-SOIC to 8-SOIC N adapter?
Post by: tekati on July 09, 2015, 02:16:54 pm
I need to replace some old TOP Pic processors with newer flash ones but the problem is all the newer flash ones are the 8-SOIC Narrow packages.

Any ideas?  Adapters?  Hacks?

It shouldn't be too difficult to just solder one side and just add tiny wires (see Dave's dead bug video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q53uPn1mKc0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q53uPn1mKc0)) for the remaining pads.

Alternatively, soic-8 has 50mil pitch, you could get two 1x4 50mil SMD headers, solder them on the soic-8, then solder your 8-soic narrow in the air (wouldn't really recommend this.... but it's an option).

Ideally you'd use a double sided adapter PCB done on something like Kapton flatflex or thin FR4, with pads to match the wide SOIC footprint on the underside, plated castellated edges, and whatever topside footprint you need for the new chip.
