Title: A 'pointless' project - demo and circuit
Post by: vk3yedotcom on September 30, 2012, 07:21:18 am
Sometimes projects most popular with non-electronics visitors are items that others would consider pointless.   Especially in the area of art and music where people either love or hate the visual or audio result.

And even though it's not needed the more obscure projects can answer questions like the maximum output power you can squeeze from a transistor, fewest parts you could use for a particular function, or the most number of stations you can pick up with a one transistor radio.

Or, as in this case, the largest number of strange noises you can get out of a simple hex inverter IC.   Below demonstrates a simple drone machine buildable by even a beginner (although it can get expensive unless you have lots of old high value pots and switches).  The circuit appears near the end.

It came about because the original unit was such a hit at a party that a friend requested one of his own.  The unit shown is the result.  It was built almost entirely out of salvaged parts (including the 1960s Rola speaker) but should satisfy when he gets it.

Annoying some may consider it, but isn't it wonderful that just an inverter chip, capacitor and resistor can generate sounds?

And that because of beat notes and interactions the end result is more irksome than the sum of the parts?
