A variable stereo blend circuit?
« on: March 12, 2020, 02:58:29 pm »
Hi all-

I have an interesting problem with recent changes to my home system.  Some recordings actually seem too stereo.  I think a variable stereo separation control would be very useful.

I would like a continuously variable knob that goes between full stereo & full mono.  This control was common on old preamps, FWIW.  A good example is the Apt Holman which is highly regarded; photo attached.

I'd like to build one passively if possible.  It'll probably be lossy but my preamp has a ton of output and can afford to spare some dBs.

So... how do I make a passive variable separation control?

Just buy a small mixer.  You only need two channels.  Plug the left and right into the two channels. You can then just use the pan control to do what you need.

This is the simplest I could come up with. R2 will need to have an exponential curve, as it will have little effect towards the high end of its setting. A taper potentiometer could be used, but it'll have to be wired backwards.
