AC Chopper circuit

i am designing a AC chopper circuit -buck type.max 230AC 5A.
i am using IGBT
but can it be used for negative half cycle
or should the IGBT be connected to bridge rectifier so that in any case it sees a potential drop and at any moment at which i give i pulse, the igbt conduct the AC voltage.
suggest any other method if the above stated method isnt valid.
