Title: Advice wanted on 200W+ main powered led driver idea
Post by: Bendba on July 17, 2018, 12:33:43 pm
Hi,

I have a heap of 10W led chips and am considering building a high power LED flood light powered from the main.
I know there are plenty of very well designed and documented circuits out there.
But this came to mind:

Simply rectify the main, and inserting an inductor and Schottky diode to form a closed loop, allowing free wheeling when switching off the MOSFET...
Hey! I reinvented the buck converter.

Is there any particular reason not to use that simple of a circuit when driving power LEDs? Of course, you would want to add a current sensing/protection and eventually a temperature sensing.

Yet in the few power LEDs I bought, they use much more complex circuits, even if there isn't always a main insulation. But despite the complex circuits, they still flicker?

Thanks in advance for pointing to the obvious issue I am not seeing. :-P
