Getting LCD panels in low quantity
« on: April 05, 2016, 12:23:51 pm »
I am currently working on a project that calls for an LCD however I'm struggling to find how I can source these reliably for a project that I only intend to make 5-10 units of. I need a 2.8" LCD, and on aliexpress.com and such I have found 2.8" panels that fit within my physical constraints but ordering from such a website obviously leads to the concern that the display will disappear tomorrow. For reference something like http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2-8-inch-TFT-LCD-screen-display-ILI9341-40-pin-plug-in-type-support-8-16/32625729884.html?ws_ab_test=searchweb201556_2,searchweb201602_2_10017_10005_10006_10034_10021_507_10022_10020_10018_10019,searchweb201603_1&btsid=6055b455-c01d-412b-bcf9-4fbfb92edc5e is what I am looking for. Has anyone got any suggestions for how I can source this kind of display?

buydisplay.com
I didn't take it apart.
I turned it on.

The only stupid question is, well, most of them...

Save a fuse...Blow an electrician.

I looked at newhaven before and unfortunately they didn't have what I wanted. buydisplay.com however looks great, they have a suitable display ( http://www.buydisplay.com/default/serial-spi-2-8-tft-lcd-module-display-320x240-optional-touch-screen ) so unless anyone has a better suggestion I think I'll go with them. Now I just need to see where I can get a gasket for the display manufactured since I need to mask off part of the display between the enclosure and the panel.

I've got a few of those 2.8" that I've played around with.  Work well enough, price is right, etc.

I turned it on.

What about a Nokia 5110 LCD Display Module, it is cheap has build-in driver and might work for you.

http://wayengineer.com/ ?

I also got 100 LCD's from iTeadStudio, not board mounted. So you can get your proto running on demo kits. Then buy the separate display. If you ask, they will sell, anyone mostly.

But beware, buying an type of LCD now can mean that type is obsolete next year.

Obvious question - why not just order 10 and be done with it?

Exactly.
The displays are $5 American each.  Not exactly a huge outlay.
Additionally, you can not guarantee any company will stock these?
The day Al Gore was born there were 7,000 polar bears on Earth.
Today, only 26,000 remain.
