Am i stupid or what? Are there no fingerwheel rotary encoders?
« on: February 17, 2020, 06:45:41 pm »
I can use a parametric search, i can use google, i can change up the search phrases. All came up empty.

You know finger wheel the mechanism that is in a cheap mouse?
Illuminated and textured wheel, with a clickable button, 24 detent/steps, simple grey code output.

Is there nothing like this you can buy as an actual assembly?
something i can mount straight to the PCB or Front panel.

All i can find is stuff that costs 50 bucks a piece, but i want a lot of them.
About 16 to 32 on a PCB, so cost is an issue.

I can build something like this myself, i got all the tools, knowledge and software.
But seriously, you can not buy a simple part like this for cheap?

My best bet is to just mount a wheel on two PCB small profile rotary encoder with a through hole axle and live without a button.

Edit, there ones: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32842510317.html

I really do not want to make 3D printed parts for this.

These come in completely assembled mice for 2 bucks with shipping.

They are called "encoder wheel" or something like this. Here one example https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33047390951.html and one more https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33051910087.html

There are also jog switches like that https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32703711386.html

Yes, they started doing that a few months ago.  Since then, I didn't order from AliExpress any more.

"Scroll wheel" comes to mind. Agilent, now Broadcom had them.

Same here. That's even worse than the stubborn "holiday special" popup or whatever it was, which they kept displaying for 2 or 3 months.

I make it a habit to click on AliExpress links occasionally, and then close their window as son as it comes up with the login (or prior to that, the popup). They must run usage statistics; maybe they'll notice eventuall how many visitors they lose in that first step.  :palm:

Are you guys on some different AliExpress? Doesn't do that to me. The "new to AliExpress?" pop-up is annoying though (at least you can close it with the escape key).

It is highly random. I think it detects some suspicious activity and does it based on that. It seems to happen more in incognito mode for me.

So if their trackers, borderline-malware, etc. fail to do the job, they'll make you log in as a last resort.  Nice.  That would explain why I am getting the login prompt every time---I do lots of ad and script blocking.

There really ought to be a web browser designed from the ground up with an overtly adversarial stance towards all content producers.  Trying to play both sides just isn't working.

OP don't forget rotary encoders cannot give absolute position, only a delta. So they aren't popular in thumbwheel kind of use or something you have to frequently adjust.

If Aliexpress cannot ID you through advertisers, it demands you log in to do a search. Really stupid and frustrating.
Once you have a established a web fingerprint, it doesn't require logging in to do a search. Very creepy.

I also block a number of things and consistently get the login screen. It may indeed be strong-arming you for your data. Comply or surrender basically.
