Title: An Electronics Storage Solution
Post by: JenniferG on February 25, 2017, 01:49:58 am
Something I came up with -- just thought I'd share.

Use photo storage boxes, stored on a bookshelf.  Each photo storage box has a handy front label you can change at will by sliding in a new label.  The bookshelf is adjustable and has twice the shelves, made of MDF (sorry for the unpainted one in the photo below -- need to finish that).  Each photo box can contain a dozen $1 (from China ebay) plastic organizers.  Each organizer holding potentially hundreds of tiny components.   Each $1 plastic organizer can have it's own label on the side, so you can immediately find what you are looking for after pulling off the shelf.  Also there can be labels on the bottom or top of the $1 organizers for each compartment.

You can use the photo storage box for other things as well as shown in photo. (Acrylic paints, medicine, tape etc.) And use the bookshelf for a hybrid of things.

For someone who is "I am not the most tidy at times lol." you seem to be very organised.  :)

Well done!

I've yet to sort out my storage solution for parts (and to acquire most of those parts too - I've got a bunch of through hole stuff that is about 30-40 years old!  :palm:)

LOL.  The shelf needs painting and I am sure it needs dusted as well.

What I also like about the width of these photo storage boxes, is that they aren't too wide for designing (in OpenSCAD or Sketchup) & 3D printing custom trays for various components (or small tools, etc.).

I pickup the photo storage boxes any time I see them at the flea market for like 25 cents to 50 cents.  Then I use 40-50% off coupons when I get them at the craft stores -- daily coupons & printable off michaels.com, hobbylobby.com & joanne.com web sites; usually get them for about $2 each.

I use similar plastic containers for storage. I got mine at one of the outdoor stores (Bass Pro Shops or Gander Mountain).  They are with the tackle boxes. They work great and with them being semi-transparent you can see what's in them without opening each one.
