Discharging ultracapacitors into a globe.
« on: May 28, 2016, 01:22:09 pm »
Mid last year I bought a set of six 350uF 2.7 volt ultracapacitors on a pcb. I had it connected across the car battery to help with starting. The car has now reached the end of it's life and is soon to be gone, so I have pulled off some of the goodies. Charged up these ultracaps to 15 volts and attached them to a car stoplight globe and let it run down while watching the volts and amps. Went through the movie frame by frame and wrote down the volts and amps and the calculated capacitance on the attached spreadsheet. (poor man's data logger).

You're not exactly in the coldest place on Earth! Was your battery (or car) THAT knackered?  :-DD

The entire car is stuffed. Battery is 5 years old too. 1992, ex cop car, ex taxi. 550,000km. Rusty, registration due in 5 weeks. If you include registration plus all the things needed to get it going again it was adding up to ~$1600 or so. 5 litre motor makes big demands on battery to crank it over.

You could at least put all the meters the right way up...  :palm:

Love all the ants running around in timelapse.  :-DD

Yeah, there's a spreadsheet attached to the first post.

Nah, that's just an artefact of you leaning over and viewing it from the northern hemisphere. Here down under it looks fine.  :)
