Help identifying transistor
« on: February 01, 2022, 08:31:29 pm »
I have a box of TO-92 style transistors that are unlabeled.  I believe they might be from a package of Radio Shack "NPN Switching Transistors", but I'm not sure.  The markings are 9287 on the top row, ND118 second row and E B C on the last row above the pins to indicate Emitter, Base, Collector.  I've googled 9287 and ND118 and have not found anything useful.  Can some one help me identify these transistors?

Pic attached for reference.

9287 would be a date code but there are no such date codes.  ND118 seems the best bet.

Having said that, just measuring beta should be enough information.  If Vbe is around 0.7V it's not a darlington.  You can current limit it to a source of voltage to see where it begins to break down.  The only other major parameter would be speed, which takes a bit more effort.  However, if beta isn't all that high, I'd assume it's a pretty fast unit.

I also have a bunch of TO-92 units that are unmarked and I use them for general purpose and they do fine.

My google fu also comes back with nothing conclusive. I'm inclined to agree with Bob, do some basic characterization and treat them as generic small signal transistors.

A useful tool for this is what I call the Magic Chinese Box.  It's an inexpensive device for determining what an unknown part is and its characteristics.  Most of us have one I think.
