Any MOSFET similar of ULN2003?
« on: August 25, 2015, 07:38:59 am »
The ULN2003 has multiple channels (I need only 4), can be driven directly from 5V MCU and has protection diodes for inductive load (e.g. 28BYJ-48 stepper motor) but has high saturation voltage because of the darlington driver. Is there a similar MOSFET IC, with closer to zero saturation voltage?

what current do you need to switch?

Maybe this?
http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/BTS4130QGA/BTS4130QGACT-ND/2231089

Search digikey in the "PMIC - Power Distribution Switches" section.
There are lots of multichannel driver ICs that have built in fets and accept logic level input.
Many are intended to drive inductive loads and dont need a back emf diode

what current do you need to switch?

100ma per channel at 2 out of the 4 channel, plus some margin.  This is to operate this stepper motor http://robocraft.ru/files/datasheet/28BYJ-48.pdf on 5V USB power.

Yes, this is what I looked for. Will give it a try. Thanks.

Tried to source it but Digiky and the other distributors don't carry it. Is it discontinued? Any new replacement?

(I am not interested in ebay or China only ICs).

Edit:  found this one http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/TPL7407LDR/296-37284-1-ND/4733033

TI's web says TPIC2701 is obsolete. No replacement. So forget about it.

Since you only need 100mA per channel, what about 4 x 2222a?  Cheap and widely available, and VCE(sat) @100mA collector current should be <0.2V.

Just realized that the TPL7407L can't replace the ULN2003 in my application because it requires a voltage of at least 8.5V and my circuit has only 5V.

Only 100mA?

Why not just any small cheap FET, eg. 2N7002? If you need a flyback diode, add one externally. Or you could choose jellybean BJTs if you don't like FETs.

Yes, I could do that, 4 FETs or pre-biased BJTs and 4 diodes. It's easier though to manually pick and place a single component.

Something like a dual N-channel MOSFET in SOT26?
Two pieces of this ought to work:

If the device has an internal diode (and all mosfets have one) you can do without the flyback diode.

I've ordered from UTSource several times and have always been happy. Generally takes 10-12 days from ordering to delivery in my mailbox in Texas.

Only if it's across the motor. The diode in most MOSFETs isn't.
You can only get away with this if the breakdown energy rating is << the energy stored in the inductor (0.5LI^2)

This is a discontinued and non SMD IC, right?

I had the same question and I've found good chip for ULN2003 substitution:

https://www.ti.com/product/TPL7407L

price is about $0.35

Min 8.5V supply :(

COM pin supply voltage usually is equal to load power, so for most cases 8,5V min is normal.
Also from datasheet's paragraph 9:
"Though 8.5 V minimum is recommended for Vcom, the part will still function with a
reduced COM voltage that has a reduced gate drive voltage and a resulting higher Rdson"

It would be nice if there was a graph of the on resistance vs power supply voltage, on the data sheet.

Toshiba has IC operating as low as 2V: TBD62783APG

Long list sourcing/ sinking types, MIN voltage 2V, 2.5V, 3V, 7V:

Take a look at Toshiba TBD62003A. Similar idea to TI TPL7404L (FETs instead of Darlingtons), but without the 8.5V requirement.
