Any video experts here?

Alex Eisenhut:
Anyone ever use a Sony MEU-WX2?
Apparently it's a professional video converter, composite video to DVI out. Or so I think.
Can these be used with any old DVI or HDMI monitor these days?

I snagged one for cheap on eBay and while it powers up smoke-free, there's no video output on the DVI when I hook it up to my monitor.

The Sony manual gives some specific studio (DC powered) monitor models it works with.

Is this a case of Sony once again implementing their own standard?
The Soulman:
I'm not an expert nor do I know anything about this specific device, however
it should work IF your monitor supports the video format from your converter.

Edit: from reading the manual it appears to be a dedicated device to work with specific monitors..
tsman:
The MEU-WX2 manual is vague and says it only use it with suitable monitors. However, if you look at the manual for a LMD-152 which is one listed then you'll find it just has a regular DVI-D input on it. The refresh rate is normal as well. There is a DC output for a monitor but it isn't required as they say to only use the display cable for one of the monitors.

If the MENU button doesn't bring up anything then it is probably dead as it has a configuration menu OSD.

--- Code: ---DISPLAY IN

Alex Eisenhut:
Yeah, just another 17$ wasted I guess.
I made a bet about the connector and the specs when I bought the thing...
Yeah it did say "For parts. Does not turn on. Unknown issue" in the item.
But when I got it it powered up, but no video.

So now I finally decided to probe the DVI connector and there are no signals on any of the TMDS pairs, but there's some 5V on the DDC signals. Maybe there's a dead DVI driver in there.

The problem is the thing is built like a tank, and it's 75% power supply boards. The logic is buried in a metal cage.

Ho well. Thanks for the comments. Too much work for now.

Unless someone knows the pinout and protocol of the service port?
Alex Eisenhut:
Duh, I guess the unit checks the monitor through the DDC thing and then powers down the drivers if it doesn't see one of the Sony monitors. :(
