Title: Are there SMD LED chips similar to WS2812 but smaller and monochrome?
Post by: VinzC on April 27, 2016, 08:55:14 am
Hi all.

I've known about Sparkfun's WS2812 (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11821) and I think I'll use it for one of my projects. I have another project in which I'll be managing an arbitrary number of LEDs without requiring port expander or any circuitry so having them wired in series like the WS2812 is the perfect match. The problem is I only know of the latter item and I don't necessarily need it to be RGB, monochrome fits as well — e.g. blue or white or yellow. Also the WS2812 is 5mm "wide" and I'd like something smaller, like 3mm or 4mm. Do you know if such a beast exists?

Thanks a lot in advance.

No, it doesn't, but you can get the WS2811 driver as a separate chip and use one chip for every 3 LEDs (the WS2811 driver chip is the little black speck you can see inside a WS2812 LED).

I buy them on little PCBs (http://www.ebay.com/itm/271529949622) so I can mix in ordinary LEDs with RGB LEDs from WS2812 strips - just connect them all together and it works.

Thanks for the info. I suspected that it didn't after a couple of searches. The goal is to reduce the number of additional circuitry to zero. I think I'll do with WS2812 anyway as it's still quite good as it is. I'll just downgrade my requirements ;) .

monochrome fits as well — e.g. blue or white or yellow.

You can get something that is smaller, the SK6812 is available in a 3535 package.

Awesome! Thanks!
