Put a battery in it!
« on: March 03, 2021, 01:09:19 pm »
I have never done this before... so please can someone point me at some resources... (I did a google but am not sure what the best approach really is)

I have a small PCB that will need 2xAA batteries for power...

How best to add 2x AA "holder" to a design?

I am guessing there are a few approaches...
  • Don't add to PCB... incorporate into case and use flying leads
  • Use a seperate battery holder and flying leads
  • Use metal 'ends' and put these as through hole on the PCB
  • Use a SMD Battery holder of some kind

I would appreciate any pointers to good designs

(We are talking 10-off quantities!)

Buy a case with battery compartment, spring contacts and leads.

Buy a case with battery compartment, spring contacts and leads.
They tend to be too big for my taste

This is one of those cases where the ones available on ebay are just the same as the ones that RS, Farnell, etc. sell. You can at least use the ebay listings to look at what configurations are easily available.

With regard to whether to fit the batteries to the PCB versus separate holder, you know that the batteries are going to leak sooner or later! That may be an important factor in your decision.

If looking for higher quality holders that the bog standard PVC ones, I can recommend good old British Bulgin ones. They're obviously premium price but you get what you pay for. Eg: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/battery-holders/0489908A/ They are rigid, and mechanically interlock.

Best Regards, Chris

Well, you didn't tell us how big your board is. Or what it does.

One other option could be to just use a 9v battery and a bit of double sided adhesive tape.

For something low current, you could use a basic ratiometric chip (voltage doubler/divider) ic, to divide 9v down to half ... ex lm2665 : https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/lm2665.pdf  or *7660 which is available in dip package as well: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/texas-instruments/LMC7660IMX-NOPB/367456

One of these especially if alkaline batteries are used. Reduces the chance of a leaking battery causing damage to the board.
