Anyone who follows the maxim of 'don't throw that away it might be useful' might come across the same problem as me, some items do not like being stored for an appreciable amount of time. This afternoon I removed a four-pole three-way switch from my hoard to build into a new project and found that the tabs on the back were tarnished. I don't know what metal those tabs were made of but, even after cleaning, I still could not solder to them. I ended up using plumbers solder and a tin of flux before I managed to tin the tags (after which I carefully cleaned the flux off).
So, before placing an item in your 'could be useful some day' box check the connections. If they look like brass then tin them before storage.

At the moment I'm hoarding space by throwing stuff out so I have more than enough space in case I ever go back to hoarding stuff :box:

Needle file works on that old chrome plate to get it solderable.
