Quick question about ripple

Quick question about ripple, lets say a switching reg for example is rated for 30mv of ripple, now does that mean up to 30mv above and below the regulated output voltage? Or a total, I.E. up to 15mv above and below?

Hi,
Generally it is assumed to be peak to peak. You also need to look to see if they specify bandwidth. Traditionally 20 MHz was used for ripple measurements. There may be noise that extends beyond 20MHz so watch out.

If nothing further is specified I would use RMS voltage. This makes "monster spikes" with high crest factor look nice within the datasheet.
And further it can be read out easily with a true RMS voltmeter in the AC+DC range.
With best regards
