EMC ups
« on: February 09, 2021, 01:05:01 pm »
Hello

I need help with my EMC ups. UPS is designed for storage and when the electricity goes off works only 5 minutes, then turn off. So, how to extend this time from 5 minutes to
until the ups detect that the batteries are empty and go off.

Pls help me.

A UPS typically keeps everything on battery until the battery drops too low. They're typically 12V lead acid batteries. You could probably replace the existing one with a car battery.

well if i replace batteries with car batteries ups still works 5 minutes cause this ups was designed for emc storage and when it was in storage was controled by storage cpu.

I suspect the 5 minutes is just bridging time to get the gas/diesel generator started.

Seriously avoid car battery! Or at least make sure the predicted depth of discharge is significantly lower than its rated capacity. A proper deep cycle lead-acid is what you need, they're designed with much more substantial plates which are deigned to recover from deep discharges, car batteries can be seriously damaged by deep discharges.

Get a software for your UPS.

Software for this ups is not on google cause ups was controlled by storage processor.

It was only designed so the storage processor could cleanly shutdown in the event of a power outage. On sites where this was used they would generally have a site UPS, Generators or a kinetic system. If all those were to fail, then the final measure is for the storage to gracefully shutdown to avoid data loss. The updated systems of today just use a bank of super caps to do the same job. Saves a lot of weight and the hassle of replacing the crappy lead acid units every couple of years.

What you need to find out is what it is that's controlling the time limit.

I'm assuming it's an MCU, perhaps there is a debug interface you could start investigating?
If you need some help with that, perhaps share some detailed photos of the PCBs and somebody might be able to direct you towards which connectors or interfaces are worth trying.

You may well find that it has been made prohibitively difficult (not saying impossible) to make a change whilst preserving much of the hardware, the manufacturers will have designed the unit around short duration operation and one of the ways of proving their product safety for certification may been making that duration completely unchangeable.

I’m not sure you will be able to increase it that far. Almost every EMC BBU I have replaced has got very warm even after just a couple of minutes on battery. Even if you can override the firmware, you may run into cooling issues.

I’ve checked navisphere and omnisphere, which were the control software for the BBUs of that age and there are no time settings in there that I can find. I can also only find firmware updates for the whole solution, not just the BBU. Not sure what model you have though as it has been a while since I touched any EMC kit.

Cooling is a bigger problem than you appreciate. It's not designed for what you want to do - get something which is.

I don't care if EMC blows up , it's important that it works for more than 5 minutes.
