Board to wire options in a space constrained board
« on: July 04, 2020, 01:42:41 pm »
I have a design which needs to fit in 10mm x 15mm size. I need two pairs of board to wire connections (battery and motor). The device is battery operated and the wires are expected to carry 500 mA or less.

The connection need not be mechanically strong. The SMT connectors I found have two additional pins for mechanical strength and occupy lot of real estate.

Can I do anything better than pin headers with 1mm pitch?

There are likely hundreds of connectors out there that meet that criterion. Browse JST's website for example. I see numerous fine-pitch SMD connectors without mechanical supports.

If absolute minimum space is required, rigid flex PCBs can be helpful but expensive to prototype. No connectors are the smallest connectors, and flex PCB can be shaped just right to connect to your stuff.

Alternatively, could your design could fit on a 2 layer flex PCB with a stiffener behind the electronics? This has been very effective and a lot cheaper than true rigid flex.

You have to be careful with JST. Not everything is available in small quantities.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.

Fair enough. Still, a ton of stuff is available from distributors.

The two PIN headers are occupying lots of space. I will explore the JST portfolio and see if I can find something.
