Building a DIY Curve Tracer
« on: October 30, 2021, 11:16:49 am »
We have a small team that is building an open source DIY Curve Tracer. Not a Tek577 replacement per se, but it can do most measurements and is a lot better than anything else we found. We are close to the final stages and have a fully operating CT that I'm making measurements with.

If you're interested, have look on my blog. Eventually everything will be shared on Github and here too but we'll wait until we have finished the project.

https://www.paulvdiyblogs.net/2021/03/building-curve-tracer-version-3.html

If you have comments or inputs, leave them here  to share because my Blog is limited in that respect.

Enjoy!
Paul

The Curve Tracer project is now finished and we have published all information needed to build an instrument yourself.

The description of this version is here: https://www.paulvdiyblogs.net/2022/06/the-vba-curve-tracer.html
The Github with all files is here: https://github.com/paulvee/VBA-Curve-Tracer

It would be nice to share your experiences here.

Enjoy & success!

I was always interested in this project.
i can make the order of the four boards at JLPCB - problem is, I will get get five sets, and if I can get at least another two guys interested, willing to purchase one set each at cost + shipping, that would be perfect. I do not want to profit, just cut a bit of slack.
I am located in Italy

I would be interested in a set of boards. Only issue is I am in Australia and not sure what the postage cost from Italy would be?

@Franco:
I am interested in one set. Germany. Do you plan to have the boards populated at i.e. JLCPCB?

I appreciate the hard work behind the development of this. Very tempting....

Would anyone have an estimate about the total cost for all the components?

Now that I completed my final version of the CT, I have a few parts available.
[update] I sold all the parts and boards to a DIY builder in Brazil.

I have a bare final Front board and also have a previous revision Front board with 95% of the required components on it, or for it.
(I'll remove the relay)
The switches and rotaries can be taken off the board using a heat-gun.
I've done that successfully myself on another revision and using the parts now on my final board.

Besides that, I have a few of the transformers, the main capacitor and a few other bits and pieces available.

Send me a PM if you're interested.

Hi folks,

anyone would be interested in a set of PCB? I am in the same waters as pizzigri, willing to place an order with JLCPCB, however, 5 sets are just to much for me :)
If there are at least a couple more guys to share the cost, let me know, I am currently located in Sweden so I will post from here.

Dbldutch absolutely gorgeous project, I've been interested in the curve tracker for a very long time, I've built a few simple ones myself, but this is the best I've seen. I wanted to build something better like TEK three years ago (I don't have the money for the original), unfortunately it didn't work out...... :--

I originally wanted to make a curve tracker as well, I made a design, ordered parts and waited. I thought I was waiting too long and started looking for the package, the carrier didn't deliver the package and it got lost - it took me a year to get my money back. In the meantime, I had the opportunity to buy a new NI210, unfortunately it is only up to 60V, its generator does not produce a step waveform and it is not possible to test transistors in the classic way.
I bought it on the one hand at a 30% discount, and because it was not working, I got another 50% discount. The repair was quite wild because the manufacturer burned all the markings of important parts with a laser.

Good to hear, then let me know your total final... I uploaded all gerbers (4 PCB) and totaled 112,14 Euros, which in case we find a new home for each set, would be 22,428 Euros + postage for a set...

update: I think we may skip the back panel...

I have sent out emails, so we will wait for a response. Yes, we can do without the back panel if it makes production cheaper - good idea :-+.

Hi parasole, we have another interested person from the forum - mweymarn 1 set, so far only one of my friends has contacted me and he doesn't want to because he built a simple tracker similar to my NI210 from Arduino, the other friend wrote back to me that he will look at the email with the information he's coming home and hasn't heard from me yet.

Hi Edison,

so by now, we are 3, not bad, although could be better :)

I did not pay attention in my previous quotation that shipping was the most expensive option, so now I excluded the back panel and selected the cheapest shipping option, the result is much better, 17,25 + shipping from Sweden in case of a 5-person order...

The back panel is basically a plain sheet... sure I may add to the order if everyone would agree...
