CH340, Oscillator question
« on: December 24, 2021, 04:32:35 pm »
Hi, i'm considering the CH340 as an UART-USB chip (currently using FTDI, planning to switch to MCP2221A) and i have one technical question:
I've skimmed through the datasheet, i see i must connect a crystal, so i assume it can't do crystal-less USB.

However i already have an oscillator on board for the microcontroller an i don't want to place a second one if i can avoid it.
Can i provide the 12 MHz from the microcontroller itself?

Side note, where do you buy yours in quantities like 1000pcs reel or so?

The CH340C, CH340E and CH340B versions have a built-in clock generator, no external crystal required. See http://wch-ic.com/products/CH340.html.

CH340B, CH340C, CH340E, CH340K, and CH340N do not require a crystal.

Available from LCSC.

I used the CH340T in my latest project because it was available and cheap and works as expected.
However this chip requires a crystal, I have included my schematic to this post and can confirm it works as expected.

However, according to the datasheet, i cannot use the internal clock if i need the chip to operate over the industrial temperature range, i guess i'll have to try for myself (or not, just use another chip)
