Just wondering whether this is ultimately feasible or if I have to buy a PicKit 5 in order to debug newer devices from MPLAB X.

I have the Pickit 3, but this does not support new devices:

buy the pickitplus  software and be happy if your mcu is supported ... i did

not sure they will ad  pk 4 or 5  in their software


alas  things come to an end  and the big fellas for sure want you to buy expensive tools, or buy an universal programmer like elnec  or xeltec ... $$$  or TNM7000
