Open source DC Load project - 250W - Recommendations?
« on: May 01, 2023, 08:49:41 am »
Hi,

Are there any open source DC load projects that people could recommend?
Something tried and tested with a stable feedback loop, 250W or greater, 80v. CC mode. Remote sensing would be nice.

I'm sure I remember seeing one like that on this board a while ago. Loads of effort was put into the design. Can't seem to find it using search.

Found the project below but it's only 50W.

Thanks.

It's not hard to optimize a DC load for 250W, usually it is about using a higher SOA mosfet or putting a few in parallel.
Adjusting the feedback loop might be needed if you place more mosfets in parallel, because you add the gate capacitance, in which the op amp has to deal with the additional capacitance.
As a starting point look for Jay_Diddy_B dc load:

I can't vouch for it but this guy is selling a PCB for a load that almost meets your needs (180-240W): https://www.tindie.com/products/fivefishaudio/180w-240watt-electronic-load-pcb/

And the design lives in the assembly document here: https://www.fivefishaudio.com/pdf/EloadAssemblyGuide.pdf

The document specifies with an upgraded pair of MOSFETs it can do 120V @ 2A (for 30 minutes).

 :-DD

Yet an other completely wrong designed dummy load circuit.

-Improper drive circuit= a nice oscillator
-No compensation for inductance caused by test leads.
-The use of blue printed circuit boards to hide your incompetence.

But probably good enough for frying fish.
