Charging LifePO4 battery with CC power supply?
« on: November 26, 2021, 02:18:18 pm »
Would it be possible to use a Constant Current DC power supply with an adjustable output voltage to charge a 12V LifePO4 battery with a capacity of 120 Ah?

It is my understanding that these cells should be charged via CC and then CV which is exactly what this power supply would be doing with a max charge rate of 60A or (0.5C) and can be set to a maximum of 13.6V (99% SOC for this battery).

Should I try doing this or should I invest in a dedicated 2 or 3 stage battery charger? I will be using it to power a 1200W pure sinewave inverter with a bypass function when AC power is present as it does not come with an integrated battery charger.

Seems safe to me but I would like to hear from people with more experience.

Yes it will work. May want to take precautions in case of backfeed, as it could destroy some PSUs.
We are talking about a 12V battery with built in BMS in case of over/under temperature and voltage right?

Yes exactly, the battery is a 12V (4s) configuration with an external BMS.

I've actually gave this setup a try and it works brilliantly and no problems with backfeed as I initially purchased this PSU to charge my 12V supercapacitor bank from 0V.
