Connector selection recommendation
« on: September 08, 2020, 08:25:27 am »
Hi,
I have a new design, it's a mother board and 8 vertical boards are going to install into it, so I need a connector with a 20-32 IO, it would be used for some LVCMOS signals, I need the connectors to be Gold plated, and male and female parts be screwed together, so that this design would pass the vibration test, also the smaller the better, I was thinking maybe DIN connectors are the right fit, But I want to know your opinion about this, any parts recommendation? do we have DIN connectors that the male and female parts can be tight together with screws?

Hi there,

It's possible that our (Harwin's) High-Reliability connector ranges might do the job for you. We have two different ranges - Gecko-SL (1.27mm pitch) and Datamate J-Tek (2mm pitch). For mother to daughterboard configurations, we'd recommend vertical females on the motherboard, and right-angle (horizontal) males on the daughterboards. If you want to be able to screw the connectors together from the daughterboard side, you will want what we call "reverse fix" fixings, so that the floating jackscrew half is on the male side.

These connectors have good vibration and shock ratings, with gold contacts. I'm afraid I'm not personally familiar with LVCMOS signals so I can't comment on that.

You can browse our catalogs for the full ranges, or if you'd like some more specific assistance you can contact our Experts.

Hope that helps!  :-+

Dear Wendy
Hi,
Thanks for the feadback, I think I would go with the  Datamate J-Tek series, also I think 16 pin version would be OK for me too.

Also I think reverse fix is the way to go, so what's the connectors part numbers?

Also do you have distributors in china, so I can buy directly for our assembly house in there.

Thanks

Hi, sorry for the delay in responding, but I'm only on here once a week (Friday mornings).

So, first thing I should warn you is that 16-contact is a non-preferred size in Datamate, and reverse fix is also a non-preferred jackscrew so you will struggle to find stock if you want low volumes with immediate availability. If you're buying volume to lead-time this should not be an issue. Sorry about this, but we have so many combinations for Datamate it is just not possible to stock everything.

For part numbers we are looking at M80-4051642 for the female vertical. The male horizontal is M80-5L11642MA.

Just in case, I also checked the Gecko-SL version to see if there was more likely to be stock - 16-contact is available in this range as a standard size. The female vertical with board mount studs for additional strength are G125-FV11605F3P, and the male horizontal is G125-MH11605M3P - both of these items are in stock at multiple distributors, so I would suggest that this is a better choice for immediate availability. You can see this stock if you follow those links to the product pages, and look at the "Availability" section.

We have multiple distributors that operate in China - also as we have stock here on the Gecko-SL parts, any of our distributors can purchase from that stock. You can see the full list of authorised distributors at https://www.harwin.com/contact/find-a-distributor/.

If you have any further issues, do please contact one of our Experts for advice.

Thanks! Wendy

Thanks for the update, then what pin sizes should I choose?

For Datamate the preferred pin counts are 14 and 20 - but I checked those part numbers and we didn't carry stock in the reverse fix either, so you'll still have the same MOQ issue whether you chose 14, 16 or 20 contacts. Hence why I'm recommending switching to Gecko-SL. Because we have less variations in that range, and it's newer and we're generally holding more stock, then the variations you need are in stock.

Sorry, should have made that clearer  :-[
