SMPS PWM VS SELF OSCILLATION

HELLO
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENT BETWEEN USING PWM IC CHIP IN SMPS LIKE UC3842 OR USING SMPS SINGLE TRANSISTOR  SELF OSCILLATION FEEDBACK CIRCUIT.
