MIPI DSI over 1-2 meter distance
« on: September 20, 2024, 01:51:13 pm »
Hi,
in the board I am designing I am driving this display which has a MIPI DSI interface: https://www.panelook.com/upload/product/243585/202403251897.pdf

After doing a bit of research it looks like MIPI DSI can only run reliably over a maximum distance of around 30cm or so. But because of mechanical constraints, the PCB might need to be placed at around 1 to 2 meters away.

Because the display will display video, I assume the software will configure the clock to run at its maximum speed.

What is the best solution to transmit that signal over that 1 to 2 meters distance?

Thank you

ADV7533 MIPI-HDMI bridge? Then whatever converts it back to MIPI.

... MIPI DSI ... at around 1 to 2 meters away. ...
No solution. In my case clock 200 MHz, I tried to connect display to Orange-IOT, no one helped (no any advice at all). To use dsi-hdmi you need change driver in firmware.

Hi, did you have any luck with this? I am looking into a similar problem - there doesn't seem to be two many
HDMI-MIPI/DP-MIPI/LVDS-MIPI ICs. Looks like mostly FPGA solutions or RGB/MIPI conversions...

There is a solution. You can use a viewing tube with a camera on one end and a display on the other, and adjust the camera to the display that needs to be extended.

You can also use a neatly cut bundle of fibres from the optical internet as a light guide, or a ready-made light guide of this type.
Or any type of optical transmission with lenses and mirrors. Similar to a LCD projector.

Thank you all.

@jas_G,
we are now looking into modifying the mechanics to keep the PCB next to the display (for a number of other reasons). But the options suggested above, unless you have very large displays running at very high clocks, they should work.

There is no talk of 2 meters (redriver):

I think most retimers assume it's not a long distance, about the distance between a laptop webcam and the motherboard. the TI datasheet has a picture.

I don't think 2m is possible.

Well, he says he will change the design so it will be solved.

Have you looked at FPD link from Ti or GMSL from Analog devices?

Thank you @alexk195,

those are also interesting solutions.

Good to know for future projects.
