Crystal SMD packaging...
« on: June 15, 2014, 06:15:01 pm »
Hi Everyone,

Is there a benefit in terms of reliability between a can type crystal modified for SMD, or one that looks like other SMD parts?

Have used both with no difference detected in both reflow and hand soldereing

they might have different stability ? according to my experience (talking about cheap xtals) : the smaller the package - the higher the ppm is. but i might be wrong ;)

You can even get crystals in polymer packages as well, instead of the more usual metal can. The main advantage is cost.

What do you guys think about longevity.  The metal can they've been doing for decades, do you think it is tougher and has a longer mtbf vs the smd style ones?

I was wondering the same thing recently, since I started looking for SMD equivalents to all the PTH stuff I keep in personal inventory.  Then I started noticing SMD crystals everywhere.  I guess I just didn't notice before because I didn't know what I was looking for.

For e.g., I have a stack of Juniper hardware behind me... router chassisesses, interface cards, routing engine cards, you name it.  There are a ton of SMD crystals on those.

If it's good enough for production telco equipment, it's good enough for me, and probably for you.  I say: Match the part specs to the requirements as usual and sail on.

I have used both and I don't think there is much difference. The metal can allows you to ground it to minimize emi.
