Compatible irons for Weller WD1?
« on: March 05, 2021, 12:40:51 pm »
Hello,

I got one spare Weller WD1 lötstation, but no irons for it. Do you know which irons are compatible with it?

It seems that it originally came with WP80 or WMP iron.  But is for example WSP80 iron compatible with it?

Seems WSP80 comes from the WSD station series (WSD81?). But will it work with WD1?

Do you have any recommendation on experience with anything that works with the WD1 station?

The weller stuff is just one huge mess. You can't really find anything about whats what.

Regards,
Y

I had to check my 2011 Conrad catalog, it says the WD1 is compatible with all (2011 era) Weller tools up to 80 Watts.
Don't know if they changed anything in later series but at least it includes WP80, WSP80, LR21 and WHP 80 and likely more.

My WDD161V station, that is likely similar to the WD1 from a compatibility point of view is
happy with any heating element above 7,3 Ohms and a PT100 temperature sensor.   ;)

I have a old wtcps magnastat self-regulating iron that I use with this station (with a fixed resistor in the plug to mimic a temperature sensor, set temperature above this threshold and the 24V ac is on, and the iron warms up.)
And I'm also working on a temperature chamber (50 degrees Celsius minimum) for my volt-nutting experiments..

A compatible plug is this one:

Pin-out could be found somewhere online, but cant find it at the moment.
I could look it up in my notes if required.

To answer your question, I like the WSP80, its a good allround use iron, although tips are fairly expensive they are easily replaced or changed out for different shapes and sizes and they last a looong time.

I just tried a WSP80 on a WD2M (the 2 channel USB connected version of the WD1 station) and it works fine.

beware!  WD1M (WD2M) is not compatible with WD1.

At least - the WMRP iron works only with WD1M (WD2M) station. It didn't work with my WD1 station (now you know, why I have an extra WD1 station).  >:(

Based on the above, if WSP80 iron works with WD2M (same as WD1M, just one channel), I'd guess, it will not work with WD1. Or will it?

Yes, that's why I'm thinking about getting the WSP80 iron for my extra WD1 station. But god knows if these two will work together.  :-//
I've had a chance to work with the WSP80 iron and it was quite pleasant to use - no issues.

WD1 is mentioned in the compatibility list on the WSP80 product page:
https://www.weller-tools.com/professional/EUR/en/Professional/Soldering+technology/Soldering+irons/Silver+Line/WSP+80

The WMRP is a 12 Volt iron and requires a different (bi-voltage?) station then the more common 24 Volt ones.

Their website is the same mess it was 15 years ago, I used to have a nice overview chart on what was compatible with what but cant find it.  :-//

Good find!  So I'll order the WSP80 and report back if it works with WD1. I hope it will.

I ducked into my store room and pulled out a WD1.

I just tried both a WMRP and a WMRT that I usually have on the WD2M on the bench, but on the WD1, you're right, neither work.

However I am glad to report the WSP-80 does indeed work perfectly well on the WD1.

It's been a long time, but ISTR the WMRP & WMRT have a reed switch or hall effect sensor on the iron, so they go to a simmering temperature when they're in their respective holders. The WSP80 is made of older stuff.

There's also a WP80 iron that looks similar but has a slightly shorter barrel by a few mm, beyond that I have no idea what the difference is between a WSP80 or WP80. It behaves like the WSP80 when I did the same WD1 tests above just now, it also works on WD1, WD2M (& WMD-3).

WSP80 & WP80 seem to take the same bits. Both irons last for ever, I've had my Weller set up for over 15 years. That includes the bits, I can't actually remember having to replace a bit yet, and I originally bought a small stock that I've never ended up using. I replaced the WP80+LT1 tip combo with the WMRP model a few years ago as my daily driver for SMD but frankly the WP80+LT1 was fine practically speaking: the only benefit I get from the WMRP is that it goes into simmer mode when it's in the holder.

Yes, the WMRP / WMRT requires a dock with a magnet to turn off into a standby mode.  The WMRP is absoletely amazing for fine SMT work.  But it is an obsolete stuff now. The replacement for it is the overpriced WX station series and the new iron is I think called WXMT. Instead of a reed/hall sensor, it has an accelerometer, that sometimes is pretty damn annoying, but the temperature regulating skills of the WX series are much better.

Thanks for doing the tests and confirming.  WSP80 + WDH10T is on the way.

Too late by the sounds of it, but the WP80 and WSP80 are basically the same thing with a slightly different barrel design. I prefer the non-S one as tip to grip distance is shorter. Should be a decent iron, though personally I've moved onto cartridge based irons from my WP80.
