Thunderbolt 4 mux switch
« on: July 23, 2023, 02:50:03 pm »
Hi there,

I'm relatively new to electronics. I was wondering if it would be possible to just have a passive mux switch that would change the between TB4 laptops and a TB4 dock. From a technical standpoint TB4 cables have 24 pins. If you were to have two inputs (computers) so 24 pins x2, where the switch would output 1x 24pin the active input (currently selected). I'm guessing it wouldn't just be this easy as someone would've likely built it already, given that these sorts of KVM style switches could easy go for $300USD for TB4. Also the laptops are powered by the cable as well through USB-C PD which delivers around 100w to them through my Caldigit TS4 dock. As far as I know TB4 cables have a special chip inside the cable ends, not sure if its just one or two. Would like to hear someone's thoughts on this.

Thanks!
