Use xtal or oscillator module?
« on: November 08, 2014, 01:13:30 pm »
I'm updating an old board. It uses three 'HC908 micros that all run at the same frequency. In the older version I had an 8MHz  crystal on the first one then a 22pF cap coupling to the next osc input and the same to the third. 10M resistor across each set of osc pins. Now I'm thinking if I use an oscillator module that has a full rail-to-rail square wave output rather than a more or less sinewave from the crystal oscillators I could ditch the extra 22pF caps and 10M resistors and just connect each OSC output directly to the next OSC input.

Are there any other good reasons for using an oscillator module instead of a crystal? Stability is not an issue. Having 4 mounting pins seems good because it is for an automotive environment.

You can save the capacitors and resistors without using external oscillators.

AFAIK correct me if i am wrong : you have a Guaranteed startup, less prone to be influenced from outside signals, but since it is a square wave it is a bit worse for other signals (EMC).
